EVE Online Answers Your Questions 249

Last week at GDC I had the privilege of sitting down to speak with a representative from CCP, the folks who maintain EVE Online. The week before, we'd asked for questions to pass on. I had the chance to put them directly to Magnus Bergsson, CMO at CCP. He very directly tackles the recent scandal involving a CCP developer, the reason why EVE's hardcore gameplay is so appealing, the balance between casual and hardcore players, and some information on the future of the game. Read on for his answers to your questions in a transcript of the interview, as well as audio live from the GDC Expo floor.

Submission + - NIST May Reverse Vista Ban

An anonymous reader writes: Following the recent string of bad news for Microsoft, where both the U.S. DOT and the National Institute of Standards and Technology said they'd ban upgrades to Windows Vista, now comes a slight turnabout. IWeek reports that the chief information office at NIST is now saying that his agency will likely lift a moratorium on deployments of Vista if the OS passes a rigorous set of security and compatibility tests. Until then, however, NIST will continue to forbid its 4,700 computer users to install Windows Vista on agency desktops or laptops or on home computers that they intend to connect to the NIST network. "For the time being, Vista is not allowed," said NIST Simon Szykman. Do you think this indicates that Vista, like all things Microsoft, will inevitably become ubiquitous, or are there serious, long-term technical issues here which could prove a stumbling block to adoption.

PS3 Owners To Simulate Gene Folding 74

fistfullast33l writes "According to IGN UK, the next version of Playstation firmware will include a joint venture from Stanford University and Sony called Folding@Home. Similar to the infamous SETI@Home project, Folding@Home will be an idle application that participates in a simulation that 'aims to map the way that genes change shape (or fold), so they can be studied by scientists and, potentially, cure illnesses such as Parkinson's or a variety of cancers.' The application will download a 'work unit' that it will unravel to completion, update Stanford's servers, and then download the next unit and continue." We've previously discussed the client; it will be available as an update at the end of the month, and should appear on your cross-media bar once installed.

Submission + - Interview with Adrian Crook, Relic Entertainment

An anonymous reader writes: GameProducer.net published an interview with Adrian Crook, a game Producer at Relic Entertainment in Vancouver, Canada. Adrian shares his insight on the production of The Outfit for the Xbox 360, describes a "typical" day for game producer and gives tips that every game producer out there ought to know. "The Outfit had to be one of the riskiest projects ever. It was a new engine, new team, original IP, launch window title and Relic's first console project. For those reasons, every aspect of it is memorable. Every time we made progress despite the odds it was an incredible rush. Some big ones were our E3 demo, Leipzig demo, and the first time the game ran at 30fps. Incredibly, they happened in that order," Adrian replied when asked about the best experiences in The Outfit game production.

SkyQube Squared Shakes Up International Calling 59

Max Matakino writes "CNet.co.uk has stumbled across a very interesting box indeed out at CeBIT: 'The SkyQube Squared from Qool Labs is a VoIP gateway that enables you to forward calls and messages made to your mobile phone or landline via SkypeOut to another number anywhere in the world.' This means that if you receive a call to your house phone while you're in China, you can get it forwarded to a Chinese cell phone or telephone for the relatively very cheap price of a SkypeOut call. I'm guessing wireless carriers aren't going to be happy about this one."

A Third of Console Owners are Adults 100

A Reuters story points out something that's probably not much of a shock to readers here: almost a third of console owners are 'adults'. This, from a study done by Nielsen, indicates that 37% of adults who go online own a videogame console. 16% own a portable game console. These aren't basement-dwelling rejects, either. Most of these individuals are married, and a full 66 percent have a child. The article suggests the increasing sophistication of the systems, as well as their new role as media center components, has added to the cachet of the console. "Microsoft Corp. and Sony Corp. are positioning their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles as entertainment hubs for gaming, music and photo viewing amid a fierce battle for dominance in the $30 billion global video- game market."

Valve To Support DX10 With Episode 2 96

In an interview with Game Informer from last week, representatives from Valve confirmed that they'll be supporting DirectX 10 functionality in the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 and Team Fortress 2. This will be the case even for those folks who haven't upgraded to Vista yet. No worries if you don't have a DX10 card, though. They've got functionality nailed all the way back to DirectX 8, and are trying to push it all the way back to 7.

Novell Assents To "Windows Is Cheaper Than Linux" 351

dyous87 points out a ZDNet article reporting that Novell has endorsed a customer's comment claiming that the total cost of ownership of Linux is higher then that of Windows. Novell and Microsoft jointly issued a press release quoting an IT guy for a UK-based bank, HSBC: "Some will be surprised to learn that our Windows environment has a lower total cost of ownership than our current Linux environment." The context of the comment makes it clear that HSBC's Linux environment has a mix of distros, and that a move to centralize around one distro — Novell's — will save money. Nevertheless, Novell's connection to this assertion is not likely to improve their reputation in the open source community.

Submission + - March is Month of PHP Bugs

kv9 writes: ""Security guru Stefan Esser launched the Month of PHP Bugs (MoPB) on Thursday, promising to release at least one bug every day for the month of March." SecurityFocus reports. "You should consider the Month of PHP Bugs a result report for just another audit we did on PHP," Esser stated on the site. "Unfortunately when you disclose security problems in someone else's code or in their bug handling process the developers often feel hurt or attacked." Esser released three flaws on March 1 to kick off the project."

Submission + - BBC strikes YouTube deal

An anonymous reader writes: BBC News reports on a deal it has struck with YouTube to show clips of BBC shows in exchange for a portion of ad revenue. Three special BBC channels will contain clips of popular Beeb shows like Doctor Who, as well as segments from archived shows and news videos. Of particular note is the attitude of the BBC director for Future Media and Technology with regards to the copyrighted material that already exists on YouTube: it won't be hunted down. "We don't want to be overzealous," he says. "A lot of the material on YouTube is good promotional content for us."
