I really want the code running in my dash board to be open source, so that I can *replace* the crud the auto maker put in there with something with dumb limits and restrictions.

I didn't even know EA was involved in any of the Wii RockBand servers. So much for playing online with my brother and sister in-law.

JJ Abrams did a good job with the new Star Trek movies.
Not really.
He made two very nice space action/adventure movies. They just really had nothing to do with Star Trek. The only "Star Trek" in it was that he reused the names of existing characters and made them act entirely differently. They could have all had different names and differently shaped ships, and it would have worked just fine with the "Star Trek" name on it.
He just plundered the existing fan base. He'll do the same with Star Wars.
Unlike newer alternatives, this are still working great.
Added bonus: you can hammer a nail with bakelite.

It amazes me that people *still* give the government interest free loans. Getting money back via your tax return is bad. I strive to owe the government the maximum amount I can each year without penalty.
I do remember reading a similar proposal in one of Isaac Asimov's non-fiction books.
His proposal included having January 1 start on a Sunday. This meant there were 13 months each with a Friday the 13th. He considered this appropriate, as I recall.

And "onsite backup" != "reliable backup".
This is an important point that many people miss when the think of backups.
A had a friend who had a RAID and additionally used an external drive for offline backups. He kept the external drive in a safe when not doing a backup. Unfortunately, his house burned down, destroying all his computers. The safe wasn't safe enough as the external drive didn't work afterwards (I think the heat got to it).
Intercepting the network traffic of dishonest employees stealing company time and network access is perfectly legitimate, as is the company reselling the captured personal data in the open market.
Management says that sales of captured employee personal data probably recover 75-80% of losses resultant from stolen company time, and increases shareholder value dramatically.

It's come a long way since I pushed it to get published on net.sources. But it still shouldn't need a whole book. Seriously.
