Submission + - Peak Oil to hit by 2012 (wsj.com)

Target Drone writes: Both Time and The Wall Street Journal are reporting that peak oil has either already arrived or will arrive as early as 2012. Peak oil is the point in time where smaller new discoveries are unable to offset declining production from older fields and we'll have to make due with ever declining oil production. Since 1980 we have been consuming more oil then we discover each year. Also, world oil production peaked at 85.5 million barrels per day in July 2006 and despite strong demand hasn't come close to this mark since.

Warner Brothers Pulls Canadian Previews 273

A number of readers let us know that Reuters and others are reporting that Warner Brothers is canceling movie previews in Canadian theaters, starting with Oceans Thirteen. A Warner VP said, "Within the first week of a film's release, you can almost be certain that somewhere out there a Canadian copy will show up." Recently, the International Intellectual Property Association placed Canada on its Priority Watch List, along with the likes of Argentina, China, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela. This community knows, thanks to Michael Geist, that the claim is mostly ficiton.

Submission + - Warner cancels Canadian Promos due to Piracy

sunwukong writes: Warner Brothers has decided that Canada is such a force in the world of movie piracy that they have cancelled all public promo screenings of their upcoming movies.


"The newly enacted policy represents the studio's response to the lack of legislation in Canada to curtail the growing wave of camcorder-shot ("camcorded") films being trafficked around the world," Warner Bros. said in a statement.

Submission + - Warner Bros. bans previews in Canada

Shambly writes: In an article by the cbc Warner Bros announces that it will cancel all previews of Movies in Canada citing its reason it says "Recently, the U.S. International Intellectual Property Alliance put Canada on a watchlist of countries it believes responsible for illegal filming and copying of movies. The group alleged that the recording, movie and software industries lose $225 million a year due to illegal trafficking in Canada."
It's funny.  Laugh.

Submission + - GetAFirstLife.com gets legal nod from Second Life

Target Drone writes: CBC has a story about GetAFirstLife.com a parody site of Second Life that has a link inviting comments or cease and desist letters. Ginsu Yoon, a lawyer for Second Life posted a note saying "... Linden Lab objects to any implication that it would employ lawyers incapable of distinguishing such obvious parody... In conclusion, your invitation to submit a cease-and-desist letter is hereby rejected."
