Submission + - Help search for Jim Gray

serutan writes: "Last week, noted computer scientist Jim Gray's small sailboat was reported missing at sea. At the Amazon.com Mechanical Turk you can help search for his boat using hi-res satellite images of the area where he disappeared. It's a long shot, but by spending a few minutes looking at these pictures you might save his life."

Submission + - A Diamond is a scientist's best friend

jd writes: "The Diamond Light Source synchrotron ring opened Feb. 5th for operation. The largest scientific facility to be built in the UK for over 30 years, it is the size of five full-sized soccer stadia and boasts a three GeV synchrotron ring hooked up to two booster accelerators. For those who prefer more normal units, the circumference is 562.6 meters. By no means as large as the Large Hadron Collider being built through the Alps, this is still considered the best medium-energy synchrotron ring anywhere in the world — according to their publicists. Their press release states that this ring is to replace the Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) accelerator at Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire, which is due to close at the end of 2008."

Submission + - 9 Most annoying Vista "Features"

firenurse writes: "Fox news has an interesting story titled "Microsoft Windows Vista's Nine Most Annoying Features". According to the article, "Windows Vista tries hard to protect us from ourselves. One unintended consequence is that it will sometimes block actions that we purposefully generated — and not even recognize that we selected the option." The link is here. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,250344,00.html "

Submission + - Religion among the /.-ers.

Caffeinate writes: "Having just finished reading "The God Delusion" I'm curious to test one of Dawkins' theories. Dawkins postulates that atheism is common among the "intellectual elite". I feel that Slashdot represents a higher than average intelligence as well as a well-educated crowd and I'm wondering what the religious divide is amongst /.-ers.

I'm hoping that sentiments such as this are not prevalent among this group."

Submission + - Fox Shuts Down Family Guy-Inspired Play

tommertron writes: "The Toronto Star has an article about Fox demanding that a Canadian independent theatre company shut down their production of "Swiss Family Guy Robinson", a retelling of the famous story featuring characters from Family Guy. The odd thing is that Fox was aware of and never shut down another recent and popular show called "MacHomer" merging the story of Macbeth with Simpsons characters. Usually on Slashdot, we see a lot of stories about corporations battling file-sharers, but this is also an interesting battleground in the intellectual property-rights arena."

Submission + - Apples reasons why a Mac is better than Vista.

antirelic writes: "I just got this advertisement from Apple in my email. "It's time to get a Mac. If you're thinking of upgrading to Vista, you'll probably need a new computer. Why not get a Mac? It's simpler, more secure, and way more fun. And it works with the stuff you already have, like printers and cameras. So before you upgrade anything, you owe it to yourself to check out a Mac." Is any of this true? Is a Mac more secure than Vista and really easier to use and more secure?"

Submission + - Wookie Impersonator Arrested for Battery

Blighten writes: "'LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man dressed as Chewbacca was arrested after police said the street performer head-butted a tour guide operator in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood... [The] impersonator was "harassing and touching tourists" in violation of city law.' NYT

It goes without saying that 'touching' people can be considered harassment. But, with the Force becoming a growing religion, what prevents someone claiming this action as a religious protest?"

Submission + - Killer bird flu invades England, wipes out turkeys

An anonymous reader writes: An outbreak of bird flu on a farm run by Europe's biggest turkey manufacturer Bernard Matthews is the highly pathogenic H5N1 version of the virus which can kill humans. It's a surprise because bird are not migrating now, in the middle of winter. So how did the virus get into the turkey sheds?

Submission + - Microsoft answers to Vista DRM critics claims

skepsis writes: Recently there were two stories in Slashdot claiming that Vista would downgrade the quality of audio and video for every application in a machine where protected content was running.

One of the stories painted a scary scenario where a "medical IT worker who's using a medical imaging PC while listening to audio/video played back by the computer" would have his medical images "deliberately degraded". Audio professionals were similarly scared by similar claims.

Well, Microsoft has just explained exactly how the content protection woks, and it turns out the medical IT staff and audio pros can relax, as all claims (even those by 'specialists') were rebuked.

It seems the Open Source crows also knows how to distribute FUD as well as MS...
