Comment Re:That's not was the Mesa devs say (Score 1) 166

AMD's intentions when realeasing the specs might not have been replacing the proprietary driver, but I don't see why a group of people from all over the world could not make the open driver as good as the already not so good closed one. If the infrastructure is there, with the specs you can do the same kind of tricks in both drivers.

Submission + - Cheat sheet on Google Buzz - explaining the basics (silicon.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Google Buzz popped up in Google Mail homepages last week — but it's not altogether clear what it is! something to do with social networking — but there's so many things around at the moment, this cheat sheet on the topic explains the basics and what the point is behind it. Very useful.

Submission + - 405 GB of NIN show's raw footage available (nin.com) 1

FedeTXF writes: This unusual message was posted in the Nine Inch Nail's forum by the official user:

"I was contacted by a mysterious, shadowy group of subversives who SOMEHOW managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour. Security must have been lacking at these shows because the quality of the footage is excellent."

The band is inviting everyone interested to do something creative with the material. Some extra details on how to handle the videos are also posted there.

Google Buzz — First Reactions 310

Google announced Buzz today, as we anticipated this morning. CNET has a workmanlike description of the social-networking service, which is integrated into gmail. CNET identifies a central obstacle Buzz will have to overcome to gain traction: "The problem, however, will be the increasing backlash Google is seeing from the general public over how much data the company already controls on their online habits." Buzz is being rolled out over the next few days so some people will see a Buzz folder in their gmail, but most won't yet (this Twitter post explains how Safari users can get an early glimpse). A blog posting up at O'Reilly Answers points out some of the distinguishing characteristics of Google Buzz — one interesting one being its ability to post an update either publicly or privately, at the user's option. This design choice places it between the public-by-default Twitter and the private-by-default Facebook. Lauren Weinstein sounds a note of caution about the inherent privacy risks of Google's method of filling out initial friend profiles by automatic friending.

Submission + - Google Docs to kill file sharing sites (blogspot.com)

ezabi writes: According to this post on the official Google blog, in the coming weeks Google Docs will offer to host all file types with a limit of 250 MB, which as they say is larger than the current limit for email attachements.
This will have its consequences; paid file sharing will die, more shared pirated material, newer vulnerabilities and malware distribution channels...

Apple Orders 10 Million Tablets? 221

Arvisp writes "According to a blog post by former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, Apple plans to produce nearly 10 million tablets in the still-unannounced product's first year. If Lee's blog post is to be believed, Apple plans to sell nearly twice as many tablets as it did iPhones in the product's first year."

Submission + - Windows ignores microsoft.com in hosts file

An anonymous reader writes: If you try to block microsoft.com in your hosts file, windows will just ignore the entry. On Vistas Windows Defender even steps in and tries to stop you from adding microsoft.com to the hosts file, but even if you ignore Defender microsoft.com will still work as if the entry wasn't there.

When I installed Fedora 4, I always had a hard freeze when accessing the US robotics modem (full V.90 modem in an 8 bit ISA card). And ever since Fedora 2 the serial port mouse never worked out of the box. Other distros did not have those issues.

Gnome's Nautilus Gets ZFS Integration, In OpenSolaris 38

13bpower writes "Sun developer Erwann Chenede posted a new plugin for Nautilus that will integrate ZFS's backup capabilities with Nautilus. This should be a pretty killer feature." As one of the comments puts it, this adds a "Time Machine-esque" function to Solaris, through which a user can specify backup frequency, and when needed browse from available snapshots to restore files.

Microsoft Pledges Conditional Support for ODF 241

Macthorpe writes "BetaNews is reporting that Microsoft has announced in a letter that they will support ODF as a format option, if it doesn't 'restrict choice among formats'. Citing their lack of opposition to the ratification of ODF as a standard, they go on to say: 'ODF's design may make it attractive to those users that are interested in a particular level of functionality in their productivity suite or developers who want to work that format. Open XML may be more attractive to those who want richer functionality [...] This is not to say that one is better than the other — just that they meet different needs in the marketplace.'"

Oracle to Compete With Red Hat for Linux Support 221

PCM2 writes "It's not Oracle Linux, but Larry Ellison has announced that Oracle will be providing full enterprise support for Linux. This means not just phone calls but also patches, security fixes, and backports, in addition to indemnification from lawsuits like SCO's. This puts Oracle in direct competition with its erstwhile partner, Red Hat, whose entire business is based on providing similar support for its Linux distro and related software."
