Submission + - Map of the web 2.0

ocean_soul writes: "Some time ago xkcd webcomic had a map of the internet. Now they have a map of web 2.0 (or, like they call it, the online communities). The surface of each region represents the number of memeberships. The different "countries" aren't just randomly placed on the map, there is a nice compass-rose-shaped island explaining the ordering of communities."
Wireless Networking

Submission + - 3G access points as competion to VoWiFi

Rupert Baines writes: "WiFi is everywhere... VoIP is perhaps the biggest threat to telecoms revenue in decades: and wireless VoIP looks likely to threaten cellular carrier in a major way. But while that is conventional wisdom, there are some intriguing alternatives. Nobody is arguing with WiFi for low-value data applications in your own hoime. But when it comes to VoIP, or enterprise communications, or corporate voice, maybe there are alternatives. In particular: cellular operators could use their (very valuable, high-quality) spectrum to enable in-home 3G services, delivering fixed-mobile-convergence to your cellphone. Not only could this destroy the case for wireless VoIP, it also makes muni-WiFi and WiMAX look less obvious. Strategy Analytics have this discussion paper: http://www.edn.com/article/CA6402245.html?partner= enews&industryid=3125 Guy Kewney, quoted in The Register has a related discussion; particuylarly scathing on WiMAX and 802.20 (perhaps unfairr — I think he misses some of the key points — but an incisive piece anyway) http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/12/27/wimax_poli ltics/"
Google

Submission + - Google using algorithm to search for Talent

lp60068 writes: From New York Times — " Google has always wanted to hire people with straight-A report cards and double 800s on their SATs. Now, like an Ivy League school, it is starting to look for more well-rounded candidates, like those who have published books or started their own clubs." It seems they realized that the best employees don't necessarily have doctorates.
