Submission + - Obama plans major patent shake up

Stony Stevenson writes: Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has unveiled his technology strategy and is calling for an overhaul of the US patent system and the appointment of a national chief technology officer. The policy states that Obama wants to upgrade the national internet network to next-generation broadband and put in laws to encourage open access for all. He has also made clear his commitment to network neutrality, but it is his policies on patents that will raise eyebrows in Silicon Valley.

Submission + - You're Cute! Mind taking a test?

ThatWeirdo writes: A few weeks ago, my friends and I were talking about the singles' scene and that what it could really use is a quick and easy STD test. While there still doesn't appear to be a Universal test, it appears that there are several 3 minute AIDS tests on the market (Medmira and Biolytical). While these tests are primarily being geared towards 3rd World countries and trying to take advantage of programs like the President's $15 Billion Aid package, I can also see them one day being marketed here next to the condoms and lubricants.

Robots Assimilate Into Cockroach Society 107

sufijazz writes "Scientists have gotten tiny robots to not only integrate into cockroach society but also control it. 'This experiment in bug peer pressure combined entomology, robotics and the study of ways that complex and even intelligent patterns can arise from simple behavior. Animal behavior research shows that swarms working together can prosper where individuals might fail, and robotics researchers have been experimenting with simple robots that, together, act a little like a swarm.' The BBC also has a video story on this."

Submission + - Message in a Bottle

theodp writes: "At the Peninsula hotel in Beverly Hills, where rooms start at $500, the minibar in all 196 rooms contains six bottles of Fiji Water. Back in Fiji, where a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the U.S. market, more than half the people do not have safe, reliable drinking water. Fast Company takes a look at the economics and psychology of America's $15 billion-a-year bottled water business, and what it says about our culture of indulgence. Perhaps you'd enjoy a $55 bottle of Bling H2O while you read it."

Submission + - America's First Cellulosic Ethanol Plant (ecogeek.org)

hankmt writes: ""The state of Georgia just granted Range Fuels a permit to create the first cellulosic ethanol plant in America. HECK YES! This is very exciting...why?"

In short: First: Because cellulosic ethanol produces ethanol from cellulose, which all plants have, instead of sugar, which is only abundant in food crops. Second: Because while corn ethanol only produces 1.3 units of energy for everyone unit of energy that goes into growing the crop and converting the sugar to ethanol, cellulosic ethanol can produce as much as 16 units of energy for every one unit of energy put into the process.

The new plant will be online, producing 100 million gallons in 2008."
