Comment Oh, wait, that's the OTHER Java (Score 1) 304

"Java Cyber Army"? Really? Shouldn't they use the best tools for the job and not restrict themselves to just Java? I mean, Java's cool and all, what with write-once-run-anywhere and the nifty Spring Framework, but-

-Wait, you mean the other Java, don't you.

Yeah, ok, that makes more sense. :)

Comment Re:Is this what Wired does now? (Score 1) 274

I gotta admit that it's been a very long time since I actually read Wired, but I remember them having more interesting stories about tech and fewer sensational pieces. The summary makes it sound like something I'd see on my local TV news station ("GOOGLE: IT MIGHT DIE??!?!??? Tune in after these advertisements to watch us speculate!").

Book Review: Assessing Vendors 27

benrothke writes "Every organization has external software, hardware and 3rd-party vendors they have to deal with. In many cases, these vendors will have direct access to the corporate networks, confidential and proprietary data and more. Often the software and hardware solutions are critical to the infrastructure and security of the organization. If the vendors don't have effective information security and privacy controls in place, your data is at risk. In addition, when selecting a product to secure your organization, how do you ensure that you are selecting the correct product? All of this is critical in the event of a breach. When the lawyers start circling, they will be serving subpoenas to your company, not your 3rd-party vendors." Keep reading for Ben's review.

Next-Gen Gorilla Glass: Smartphones Could Have Antibacterial, Anti-Glare Display 175

MojoKid writes "It's not too often that upcoming glass technology is worth getting excited over, but leave it to Corning to pique our interest. During a recent talk at MIT's Mobile Technology Summit, Dr. Jeffrey Evenson took to the stage to reiterate what it is about Gorilla Glass that makes it such an attractive product (something well evidenced given the majority of smartphones out there today implement it), as well as to give us a preview of what's coming. Having pretty much mastered Gorilla Glass where strength, scratch-resistance and general durability are concerned, the company is now looking to improve-upon it (possibly for Gorilla Glass 4) by making it non-reflective and germ-resistant. Imagine your smartphone sporting this — you'd finally be able to see the screen regardless of how bright the sun behind you is. Unfortunately, it appears that it won't be hitting our phones or tablets that soon. The estimate is 'in the next two years.'"

Comment Redundant summary is redundant (Score 1) 404

Could we have someone, maybe an editor, tighten up the summary a bit? Here's what I see:
idea : # times it occurs
"Let's mention this on /." : 3
"It's done" : 2
small runtime : 2
features : 3 (plus that laundry list of actual features)

Instead, let's try this:
"The Dao language has recently made its first beta release, and we think you Slashdotters will Eff'ing love it. Dao is an optionally-typed programming language that supports many advanced features (probably as many as Python ) with a small runtime (closer to Lua than Python). Besides optional typing, Dao also has built-in support for concurrent programming for multicore computers, very friendly C programming interfaces for embedding and extending, an LLVM-based JIT compiler, a Clang-based module for embedding C/C++ codes in Dao, and a Clang-based tool for automatic binding generation from C/C++ header files."

See? That wasn't so tough, probably took 5 minutes, and is much more readable....

Even if the farmer is technically a businessperson it's still clear that the SCOTUS ruled in favor of the large corporation (at the expense of everyone else), as they're now wont to do:
