After 3 Years, Rockbox 3.0 Released 248

DarkkOne writes "Rockbox version 3.0 is out. Three years in development, it marks the introduction of many new players since the 2.5 release and offers software-based playback allowing audio of nearly any commonly (or uncommonly) used format on a list of MP3 players by Apple, iRiver, Cowon, Archos, Toshiba and Sandisk. Beyond this it is FLOSS, under the GPL v2 license (or later), and includes a variety of plugins such as games and simple apps. 3.0 is the first official release for any players not made by Archos and more or less marks the beginning of a much more regular release cycle for the software."

Different people have different habits. When I sit down to watch "The Office" I change to that channel then put the remote down until the credits when I change to CBS to watch "CSI". I don't flip channels because I'm not interested in seeing 2 minutes of another show or 2 minutes of commercials on another channel.

The gold wasn't to bribe other countries (though I do remember something dealing with the underwater hardlines), it served several purposes, including giving Epiphyte II hard assets--thus preventing The Dentist from recouping the entirety of the corporation in litigation for corporate negligence, and/or reducing the equity share he would receive if he did win in court [I can't remember])--and also creating a solid basis for digital currency without requiring them to deal with some of the shadier sorts in the earlier Kinakutan meeting, and finally there was some mention of along the theme of holocaust prevention, since the money came from the blood of others to begin with.

No Full HD Playback for 32-bit Vista 554

snafu109 writes "Pity the Vista user with a 32-bit CPU. Senior Program Manager Steve Riley announced today at Tech.Ed Australia that full HD content shall only be played at the full resolution where only signed drivers are used — only in the 64-bit version of Vista. From the article: '"Any next-generation high definition content will not play in x32 at all," said Riley. "This is a decision that the Media Player folks made because there are just too many ways right now for unsigned kernel mode code [to compromise content protection]. The media companies asked us to do this and said they don't want any of their high definition content to play in x32 at all, because of all of the unsigned malware that runs in kernel mode can get around content protection, so we had to do this."'"

How Open Does Open Source Need to be? 147

mjhuot writes "Doug MacEachern, CTO of Hyperic and creator of mod_perl, responds to criticism by Tarus Balog, a maintainer of OpenNMS, that his company's recent open source announcement is nothing but a marketing ploy. It is starting the debate on whether or not just releasing some code qualifies an application as 'open source.'"

Judging The Apple 'Sweatshop' Charge 828

jurgen writes "MacWorld summarizes an article published in the U.K., stating that Apple's iPods are made in China by women who work 15 hours/day, make $50/month, and have to pay half of that right back to the company for housing and food. The article also claims the workers live in dormitories where they are housed 100 per room, and are not allowed visitors." A Wired article looks at the same story, exploring the reliability of the Mail on Sunday's claims. From that article: "The situation is too murky for a rush to judgment on Apple's ethics here, and it may well meet minimum global standards. But for a company that has staked its image on progressive politics, Apple has set itself up as a potential lightning rod on global labor standards. Sweatshops came back to bite Nike after its customers rose up in arms; and Apple can expect a similar grilling from its upscale Volvo-driving fans in the months ahead."

Worm Wriggles Through Yahoo! Mail Flaw 186

Jasen Bell writes to mention a ZDNet article about a clever new worm affecting users of Yahoo!'s email service. The virus uses a flaw in JavaScript to infect a computer when an email is opened from the user's web-based mail. From the article: "The worm, which was spotted in the wild early this morning, has hit the remote server more than 100,000 times, forwarding Yahoo e-mail addresses harvested from unsuspecting users, Turner said. Although the worm is spreading quickly, and no patch has been issued, Symantec is rating the threat a '2.' The security vendor uses a 1-to-5 rating system, with '5' as its most severe category."

I've been to all the levels OTS, total customization, and COTS and they all work and fail depending on if they tool fits. Most tools do not fit the requiremnts and usually create hurdles for the poor peopel that have to use them. Very often the managers and developers dont; even consult the end-user. TThen when you deploy an honestly well doen better system lots of users dont; want to change they way they've been doing things forever, they dont; want to change even if you show them that the new way is faster and easier for them and the reason is either lazyness, ignorance, or wanting to save their own jobs.
