Comment use slashdot's poll caveat (Score 1) 131

It should be the common understanding among the public that results from MetaCritic (or any other sites of such nature) must bring to mind Slashdot's poll caveat, i.e.,:

"This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane"

Comment kickstart the program (Score 1) 312

I wonder if SETI could benefit from Kickstarter the same way some other folks have been successful.

I thought they did a good job to farm out little bits of data for people to run on their computers. This is the very same reason why I think it might be possible for SETI to get funding by way of kickstarter.

I am sure there are still dreamers in this blue earth that could give SETI a hand, provided the objectives and level of outsider participation (like myself) are meaningful.

ps: otherwise, just do it the archaic way: sell t-shirts, dammit. I'll buy one.

Comment fame seeker (Score 1) 540

I can see the allure of fame for people to apply to Mars One to be the first to reach Mars.

I can see the allure of wonder for tv audience to gaze at Mars from its surface.

But what would bring other potential applicants and viewers back for the second or the third time since the scenery on Mars, interaction between rational people, etc. do not change so much?

If part of your funding is predicate on viewership, is this not problematic for future mission?

According to your (Bas Lansdorp) LinkedIn bio, you founded Ampyx Power upon graduation and left the company three years later to start Mars One.

Maybe you can share with us what compelled you to leave Ampyx Power to branch out into something new?

Mars One's first mission won't start until 2022 as I understand it and as a founder, I am sure you want to see this thing through. Dare I ask what circumstances would make you walk away from this project?

I would usually re-compile and re-run my codes at least four times to make sure that the compiler is not lying to me before I think to re-visit my broken codes.

Kidding aside, maybe this free online course from Peter Norvig will prove useful to someone.

Comment A broken heart speaks out (Score 1) 100

I love the first Assassin's Creed like my own child, complete with its flaws. Above all else, the story was great.

Then came AC2, and with it, all the magic was gone. Hated the story and because I do not connect my PS3 to the internet, the only way I can re-visit some of the better missions is to replay the game from the beginning.

Comment great expectations (Score 1) 406

Is it possible at all to pay for a service and be reasonable about the expectation (from both sides)?

If you rent an apartment and electricity comes for free, would you feel guilty if you use more than you normally should?

I am sure there were times when we all tried to get our money's worth when we dined in a buffet restaurant. Is this the same mentality here as well? In all likelihood, it is possible to break the buffet restaurant business model as it is to the AT&T model.

ps: Sorry, I was not able to post a link to google map to show the distance between the two buildings. Somehow, when I paste the link in my comment, google map would only show one of the buildings only.
