Comment This is news? (Score 1) 354

Is this really news to most people?? Of course big companies that sell stuff analyze what their customers purchase. Why wouldn't they? The only problem I have with this story is that it's probably only the very tip of the iceberg of what kind and how much data companies have about us.

Submission + - Enhancing your breathing experience with breathable caffeine (patexia.com)

techgeek0279 writes: "Breathing only air is passé. People have been breathing air forever. People breathe air every day, all day. It is boring. So why are people only breathing air? Are there no other wonderful substances that could enhance our drab breathing experience? David Edwards, a Harvard professor and founder of Le Laboratoire, seems to think that it is possible to enhance breathing. So, he developed Aeroshot."

Submission + - Google gets approval to buy Motorola (examiner.com)

An anonymous reader writes: From the Article:
"
Today, the European Commission approved the acquisition of Motorola by Google. Joaquín Almunia, Commission Vice President in charge of competition polices stated that they will be continuing to watch Google as the acquisition goes through. It was a unanimous decision by the Commission as well. The European Commission and the United States Justice Department often coordinate over big deals like this, so it is very likely the deal will get approval by the US within a few weeks.

Submission + - LHC beams its beams up to 4 TeV (web.cern.ch)

An anonymous reader writes: Due to a decision made at Chamonix , the LHC will operate a 4 TeV beam energy in 2012. This will allow at least 20% increase of luminosity and ensure the Higgs (de)falsification. After that the whole accelerator complex will shut down and be open for guided tours. “By the time the LHC goes into its first long stop at the end of this year, we will either know that a Higgs particle exists or have ruled out the existence of a Standard Model Higgs,” said CERN’s Research Director, Sergio Bertolucci. “Either would be a major advance in our exploration of nature, bringing us closer to understanding how the fundamental particles acquire their mass, and marking the beginning of a new chapter in particle physics.". Will this be the 2012 Nobel prize?

I agree with most of what you're saying however you're missing one important point. You're placing the blame for all of this on the government, when in reality our government is a worthless puppet that is incapable of doing much of anything without some sort of outside force pushing and prodding it (e.g. legalized bribery... err lobbying).

kaptink writes: The now ex-US senator and current CEO of the MPAA, Chris Dodd, may face a White House investigation after he made an extraordinary outburst that appeared to threaten politicians who had the audacity to take the entertainment industry’s money and then abandon SOPA/PIPA online-piracy legislation.

“Those who count on quote ‘Hollywood’ for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who’s going to stand up for them when their job is at stake," Dodd told Fox News. "Don’t ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don’t pay any attention to me when my job is at stake.”
