Comment Nuts to Grenpeace (Score 4, Insightful) 143

Their rating system is entirely biased and is not even remotely objective. Their admitting in the past that they will still give failing grades to some companies even if they are the greenest around just because they think it might influence them to do better. Basicaly saying regardless of how well you do you'll never be good enough.

Effectively they invalidated the entire program of rating companies meaningless. You cant hold everyone to wildly different standards and still expect to be taken seriously.

So this guy's phone is off right?

I sure as hell don't carry around my disabled phones with me so their request would have been entirely useless.

Also, if the radio was the carrier can still find it. Like others said 911 is still always active on the phone regardless of service. This is why its suggested to leave a phone and a charging cable in your trunk in the event of an emergency.

Seems everyone is making a big deal out of a stupid request. It should be "Moron cops don't understand technology, make idiotic request. Thinks cell phones allow you to track people even if they don't have it on them."

Journal Journal: After Price reducing, Apple is selling 27000 iPhones per Day

According to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, Apple has reduced the price on iPhone for 200$ purposly to achieve triple increase of demand on this device. He has found out that in Apple Store and AT&T shops, before reduction of price every day was sold about 9,000 devices. It has allowed the company to sell 594 thousand devices to September, 5th. We have to add to this number 270 thousand iPhone which was sold for the first few days, so it appears that from September, 5th till September,

Submission + - Cisco Confirms Denial of Service in IOS (cisco.com)

gattaca writes: "Cisco has announced a confirmation of an unpatched denial of service in Cisco IOS.

I have just discovered a regular expression that crashes the router. I suspect the error is because of division by zero. Since I work for the Enterprise, I do not have direct access to TAC. Please somebody report this to Cisco. I have tested it on ranges of routers (2611, 2821, 2851, 7206) and IOSes (12.0-12.4). All routers crashed with some type of BUS ERROR. Command can be issued in user mode, therefore I think it can be considered as vulnerability to potentially cause DOS.

Submission + - Wiinamp (wired.com)

Floritard writes: Winamp turns 10 and offers a few features that might interest those weary of iTunes including the Winamp Remote feature which "allows you to stream the music and videos on your home computer to any other computer, a Nintendo Wii, or a cellphone, simply by leaving your home computer on and logging in to winamp.com/remote (iTunes, on the other hand, only lets you stream to computers on your local nework)."
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Scientists develop non-stick gum... (independent.co.uk)

Zephida writes: Non-stick chewing gum which cannot glue itself to pavements, seats or shoes — and with the added bonus of being completely bio-degradable — has been invented by a British scientist in what is thought to be a world first
The gum contains a new kind of rubber-like polymer that lacks the stickiness of conventional chewing gums, which have become a costly environmental problem for local councils because of the millions of discarded cuds which remain glued to pavements and buildings for years.

Submission + - Linux to get the boot at Army Corps of Engineers? (linux.com)

Joe Barr writes: "Linux.com is reporting that according to an anonymous source working at the Geotechnical & Structures Lab of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, Miss., a committee of government employees and contractors at Vicksburg is considering a new IT policy which will force everyone to move to Windows XP if they are not already running it, and to port all applications save one currently running on Linux to Windows. The lone exception would be moved to Solaris."

Submission + - Attosecond X-ray light pulses

Roland Piquepaille writes: "Before going further, do you know what is an attosecond? It's just a billionth of a billionth of a second. And German researchers have showed that a 'flash of light can be shorter than the time it takes the wave carrying the flash to perform a full oscillation.' They were able to generate flashes of laser light so intense that the atoms exposed to it emit an attosecond X-ray pulse 'whose wave components, if oscillating more slowly, would represent nearly all colors of visible light, all the way from blue through green and yellow to red.' Even if this discovery made the cover of the August 10 issue of Science, don't expect an immediate impact on us, but it sure will accelerate basic research on material properties. Read more for additional references and a schematic of the experimental setup used for attosecond-pulse generation."
