Submission + - Live for Windows priced identically to Live on 360

Xisiqomelir writes: Game Informer reports that Microsoft, at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, has unveiled its pricing scheme for the upcoming Live for Windows....as identical to Live on Xbox 360. Are PC owners, who have historically had free online multiplayer, going to embrace a $50 yearly subscription for access to that feature?

Submission + - Dell may offer Linux as alternative to Windows

Anonymous Coward writes: "BOSTON (Reuters) — Dell Inc. (DELL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) is considering offering the Linux operating system as an alternative to Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows on its personal computers, a Dell spokesman said on Tuesday. The PC maker said it received more than 100,000 customer requests for Linux in a "suggestion box" posted on Dell's Web site less than three weeks ago. "We are listening to what customers are saying about Linux and taking it into consideration," said Dell spokesman David Lord. "We are going forward. Let's say, 'Certainly stay tuned.'" The only operating system that Dell currently offers on its PCs is Windows, with one exception, Lord said. It sells high-end Linux desktops designed specifically for use in oil and gas exploration, he said. http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUS N0644160820070307"

Submission + - Remote Control To Prevent Aircraft Hijacking

Snad writes: "The UK's Evening Standard is reporting that Boeing plans to roll out aircraft remote controls systems in a bid to eliminate the threat of terrorist hijackings, and prevent any repetition of the events of September 11 2001.

"Scientists at aircraft giant Boeing are testing the tamper-proof autopilot system which uses state-of-the-art computer and satellite technology. It will be activated by the pilot flicking a simple switch or by pressure sensors fitted to the cockpit door that will respond to any excessive force as terrorists try to break into the flight deck.
Once triggered, no one on board will be able to deactivate the system. Currently, all autopilots are manually switched on and off at the discretion of pilots. A threatened airliner could be flown to a secure military base or a commercial airport, where it would touch down using existing landing aids known as 'autoland function'.""

Submission + - Vista and 9 patches released on the same day

em8chel writes: "According to golem.de (http://www.golem.de/0701/50244.html) (in German), Microsoft has released 9 patches (screenshot http://scr3.golem.de/?d=0701/Vista-Update&a=50244& s=1) on the same day the Redmond company launched Vista to the general public. Three of these patches ranked as "important" are a signature for Windows Defender, a tool to remove malicious software, and (surprise surprise) a fix for the Windows Error Reporting tool which would "unintentionally" send reports to Microsoft without users' permission.
A recommended patch fixes the problem that after certain drivers are installed, the already activated Vista would need reactivation.
The rate patches for Vista are released, can Service Pack 1 be that far away?"
