EVE Player Loses $1,200 Worth of Game Time In-Game 620

An anonymous reader writes "Massively.com has reported that an EVE Online player recently lost over $1,200 worth of in-game items during a pirate attack. The player in question was carrying 74 PLEX in their ship's cargo hold — in-game 'Pilot's License Extensions' that award 30 days of EVE Online time when used on your account. When the ship was blown up by another player, all 74 PLEX were destroyed in the resulting blast, costing $1,200 worth of damage, or over 6 years of EVE subscription time, however you prefer to count it. Ow."

Absolutely, positively do some research first. There are many folks doing formal algorithmic research, and something like your algorithm may have been published 5 or 10 years ago. That should not be taken as advice to NOT submit ... just be prepared to be rejected because your algorithm has already been described by some uber math geek in Russia, Germany, or another country.

Comment Next Gen Robots Makes Sense (Score 1) 89

Aside from the obvious fascination with anthropomorphic robots, the idea of smarter, semi-autonomous devices is attractive. Astronaut goes out of the lander/base, and deploys two or three bots with science experiments. They sit there and run, perhaps moving their arms/probes, and shifting their solar panels to follow the sun. The bots could be remote driven back to base, to be refitted. Need to upgrade firmware, or swap out spectrometers? No prob for the astronaut, who is on-site. No more Spirit stuck in a sand trap. The possibilities for augmenting the science to be done -- human PLUS next-gen bots -- is a win-win.

Facebook has some ease-of-use advantages to the tools you mentioned, esp. for multimedia sharing as the AC posted above. I can easily see the pictures of my cousins / old college friends / other relatives, and they can see mine -- without following a lot of random Flickr or Photobucket links. I don't use Twitter, because I don't feel the burning need to microblog. I post occasionally to my blog site, when I have more thoughts to share. A critical mass of my family and friends are on FB, so that I can use it to meet my needs. And let's not talk about FB as a platform for social gaming ... Just step away from the farm implements, and no one gets hurt.

At least 50% of my paychecks would be converted into tokens and put into one of many Neo-Geo machines at the arcade when I was in high school. It's good that my favorite old games finally have an anthem.

Woman Creates 3-D Erotic Book For the Blind 113

Lisa J. Murphy has written an erotic book with tactile images for that special visually impaired porn connoisseur in your life. Tactile Mind contains explicit softcore raised images, along with Braille text and photos. From the article: "A photographer with a certificate in Tactile Graphics from the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Murphy learned to create touchable images of animals for books for visually impaired children. Then she realized that there was a lack of such books for adults only. 'There are no books of tactile pictures of nudes for adults, at least the last time I looked around,' says Murphy. 'We're breaking new ground. Playboy has [an edition with] Braille wording, but there are no pictures.' She says that while we live in a culture saturated with sexual images, the blind have been 'left out.'"
