System security personnel are up against specialists, and possibly hundreds of them. When one hits a dead end they hand off to someone else with a specialized approached to that particular dead end. Crack, now its handed along to the next person who has the key to the next locked door. It can be like running a relay race when you can't hand off to someone when you tire. The root of the white hat problem is trust between security organizations. Even the pentagon is trying to bolster its cyber Command force from 900 to 4900. In addition to the numbers problem is the hearts, and minds issue. No one stands behind the person that makes their life more complex. Telling your average person to use at least 16 characters, upper and lower case, along with numbers is not going to make you allies. I could go on.......

Submission + - Find My Mac Helps - And Frustrates - Law Enforcement (itworld.com)

jfruh writes: When Corine van den Houten's iMac was stolen, she quickly used Find My Mac to track it to its new location. The problem: That location was a huge apartment building, and the police were uninterested in searching 300 apartments to look for it. While the iCloud feature has certainly been helpful in many cases in tracking down stolen or missing goods, it's often just shy of being precise enough to help.

Submission + - Hackers Using Brute-Force Attacks to Harvest WordPress Sites

Trailrunner7 writes: Months of distributed denial of service attacks against major U.S. banks have evolved in magnitude and ferocity causing service disruptions for online banking customers. They’ve also shown the way for other attackers to adapt and evolve techniques used in those attacks.

Apparently, someone is building a formidable botnet of compromised WordPress accounts that is likely to be used in a much larger attack, some experts are speculating. Similar to some of the late-stage bank DDoS attacks that used Web servers to generate unprecedented levels of traffic targeting online banking services, this WordPress botnet could be as disruptive.

Attacks against WordPress sites began last week, when some Web hosts and security experts reported brute-force attacks against administrative credentials using a combination of “admin” as a user name, and a list of common passwords. Compromised sites built on WordPress would notice slower back-end operations, log-in difficulties, or downtime.

Submission + - Ignore your dull family, says new Facebook Home ad (cnet.com)

plastick writes: Admit it, your family is just awful. Your Facebook friends are more important and interesting, says a new Facebook ad.

You know those self-centered, self-regarding people who just have to look at their cell phones during dinner? Facebook loves them. Facebook admires them. Facebook wants to promote them.

This thrust toward spiritual progress is the company's latest ad for Facebook Home...

Oh, all families are awful, aren't they? They insist on imposing emotional control upon you. They tell you what to do, what to think, what to believe, and which lover to toss down the chute of despair. And what do you get in return? Food, that's what. Yet Facebook wants you to believe that your Facebook friends are your real family. Yes, those people whom you hardly talk to, hardly remember, or hardly even know.

Submission + - Red Hat Launching its own Community Distro of OpenStack (serverwatch.com)

darthcamaro writes: Red Hat still doesn't have a fully supported commercial version of OpenStack in the market yet (coming this summer) as it lags behind Ubuntu and SUSE. But Red Hat is doing something no other distro vendor has done, they are launching a brand new bleeding edge build of OpenStack that will update weekly (or faster). The best part? this isn't a fork it's all upstream work, meaning everyone in the OpenStack Community benefits:

"Our developers will continue to work in the upstream OpenStack, and "whenever we find we need to make changes to make RDO work, we get that work done upstream first," Red Hat CTO Brian Stevens said. "RDO won't change in any way our active involvement in the upstream OpenStack development."

Submission + - Lab-grown kidneys transplanted into rats (nature.com)

ananyo writes: Scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston have fitted rats with kidneys that were grown in a lab from stripped-down kidney scaffolds. When transplanted, these 'bioengineered' organs starting filtering the rodents’ blood and making urine.
The team, led by organ-regeneration specialist Harald Ott, started with the kidneys of recently deceased rats and used detergent to strip away the cells, leaving behind the underlying scaffold of connective tissues such as the structural components of blood vessels. They then regenerated the organ by seeding this scaffold with two cell types: human umbilical-vein cells to line the blood vessels, and kidney cells from newborn rats to produce the other tissues that make up the organ (paper).

Submission + - Small Businesses need Protection (tumblr.com)

Seth Mossberg writes: Cyber crime is rampant. When one group or individuals have been identified and arrested, it appears that new criminals learn from their mistakes and begin to take over the territory. These hackers can be some of the best in the world. They do not discriminate. They will target small businesses as well as large corporations. Businesses loans are more vulnerable because they depend on the traditional software for data security.

I do agree that /. has changed some, but I still find my self laughing when I read the comments. There are still insightful, and funny people around.

Submission + - composite combat baseball bats

An anonymous reader writes: Resist (the company) started off in 1998 when they began producing softball bats regarding other manufacturer companies. ComBat bats ended up born inside the last decade when they chose to put out the identical bats some people make regarding other companies inside their own appoint, including karate bats.

Here is the dirty little secret in many industries. The recognized manufactures hire another company to produce products utilizing name at it (just like some U . s . cars usually are really Western cars along with different appoint plates. The Chevy Nova relates to mind). I’ve possibly not been successful knowing the bats they’ve designed for others, but I’m inclined to think it had been for softball bats.

Combat is focused exclusively at composite along with hybrid karate bats. They’re priced not as much as the recognized manufacturers; when they should often be since some people don’t have name realization.

They have a composite/wood karate bat (sure, you observed me perfect). I’m not visiting talk related to these since Absolutely , them as a novelty. History may perhaps prove me wrong nevertheless no battler in high school or institution baseball will probably be using your composite/wood bat at any time soon.

Combat features a limited line-up of baseball bats. There're:

Resist virus – Just one piece, single walls bat using a stiff handle. The Pathogen has numerous codes regarding it’s sdult (AB), childhood (YB) along with senior little league (SL) bats. While it’s not as much as the IMX, Triton along with CF3 the herpes simplex virus is not inside their league. The herpes simplex virus competes when using the Omaha Comp, along with I’d have the Omaha Comp.

Resist B2 Da Bomb – On earth do you want the words “Da Bomb” with your bat? Just one piece, single walls bat using a stiff handle. Only easily obtainable in youth models. While it’s economical (for the composite) I’m not ponying $245 at “Da Bomb”. You will find better options to choose from for the actual youth battler.

A number of swear simply by Combat, but My partner and i can’t highly recommend it presently. There usually are just lots of unanswered queries. And there’s no way a high school or institution player will probably be swinging your Combat bat.

For data on different bat manufacturers look at My Karate Bat Testimonials By Classification and don’t forget for vacations the webpage at Karate Bat Assessments.

Submission + - Passthoughts, not Passwords: Authentication via Brainwaves (darkreading.com)

CowboyRobot writes: A new study by researchers from the U.C. Berkeley School of Information examined the brainwave signals of individuals performing specific actions to see if they can be consistently matched to the right individual. To measure the subjects' brainwaves, the team utilized the NeuroSky Mindset, a Bluetooth headset that records Electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. In the end, the team was able to match the brainwave signals with 99% accuracy. "We are not trying to trace back from a brainwave signal to a specific person," explains Prof. John Chuang, who led the team. "That would be a much more difficult problem. Rather, our task is to determine if a presented brainwave signal matches the brainwave signals previously submitted by the user when they were setting up their pass-thought."

Comment I am for more content. Quality content. (Score 5, Insightful) 143

I do not care who makes the product. As long as the artists make a fair wage, and the content is quality. Good audio quality content is hard to find anywhere on the web. Finding quality MP3 bitrate is hard as well. That is why people turn to apple, because there is quality control. I would love to see a free software foundation built store full of high quality content that artists are proud to be a part of. Developers are artists, and like artists its had to get along, and agree on some thing so large. maybe I should go over to kick starter...... But then Stallman would get mad when the Hollywood types would want to DRM the whole business.
