Submission + - Nanowires Inject Stuff Into Living Cells (technologyreview.com)

TechRev_AL writes: A scientist at Harvard University has developed a clever trick for manipulating the insides of living cells. Hongkun Park grows cells on top of nanowires so that the wires poke into the cells like needles, which allows molecules to be delivered inside them. To use the nanowires to deliver molecules, Park's team first treats them with a chemical that would allow molecules to bind relatively weakly to the surface of the nanowires. Then they coat the wires with a molecule or combination of molecules of interest. When cells are impaled on the nanowires, the molecules are released into the cells' interior. This gallery of images shows the cells growing on top of the nanowires.

Or maybe it has something to do with audiences today being more finicky. They had to reboot the Bond franchise a few years ago because audiences didn't click with the old school Bond. And having seen every film, I can tell you that Casino Royale and especially QoS are *very* different from the first 18 or so films.

Submission + - Google Charges Nexus One ETF on top of Carrier one (phandroid.com)

dumbnose writes: Oh boy – queue up the backlash. Your parents always told you to read the fine print and the Nexus One Terms Of Sale reveal a troubling detail that we can’t quite figure out. If you buy a subsidized Nexus One through your carrier and cancel your account you not only have to pay an Early Termination Fee (ETF) to your carrier but ALSO have to pay GOOGLE an ETF that automatically charges your credit card the remainder of full price of the phone.

Comment About time (Score 1) 3

With the debacle that was Spiderman 3 and the recent successes of the Iron Man and Batman reboots, this makes perfect sense. Iron Man and Batman showed audiences (and moviemakers) what kind of film you can create when you take the storyline serious (but not too serious a la X-Men 3) and respect your audiences' intelligence. Hopefully the next instantiation of Spider Man will do likewise.

Submission + - Unusual space object, approaching Earth (spacefellowship.com)

xp65 writes: An unusual space body with parameters similar to a man-made object will approach Earth on Wednesday at a distance about three times less than the moon's orbit. The object, named 2010 AL30, will fly by Earth at a distance of at least 128,000 km (about 80,000 miles) at 12:48 GMT. As it is some 10-15 meters long, there is no chance it will directly impact the planet.

Submission + - 'Spider-Man 4' Scrapped, Franchise Reboot Planned (imdb.com) 3

derGoldstein writes: Yesterday it was asked What SciFi Should Get the Reboot Treatment Next?. If you consider SpiderMan as "proper SciFi", then it would appear that's the answer. According to IMDB, "Sony Pictures decided today to reboot the Spider-Man franchise after Sam Raimi pulled out of Spider-Man 4 because he felt he couldn't make its summer release date and keep the film's creative integrity. This means that Raimi and the cast including star Tobey Maguire are out. There will be no Spider-Man 4. Instead, the studio will focus on a reboot script by Jamie Vanderbilt with a new director and a new cast."

Comment Re:CPU downclocking is not news (Score 3, Interesting) 190

This thing is as old as my beat up Pentium III Inspiron 5000. Varying GPU clocks is also old.

What is interesting is seamless switching between GPUs. Everything else is just marketingese for "we do what everyone else does and we actually bothered to put some extra effort into power optimization".

But enabling non-expert users to look under the hood and moderate behavior accordingly is new. Healthy skepticism aside, Asus has built up mad street cred recently and deserves the BOTD to some degree.

Super-Earths Discovered Orbiting Nearby, Sun-Like Star 242

likuidkewl writes "Two super-earths, 5 and 7.5 times the size of our home, were found to be orbiting 61 Virginis a mere 28 light years away. 'These detections indicate that low-mass planets are quite common around nearby stars. The discovery of potentially habitable nearby worlds may be just a few years away,' said Steven Vogt, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at UCSC. Among hundreds of our nearest stellar neighbors, 61 Vir stands out as being the most nearly similar to the Sun in terms of age, mass, and other essential properties."
