I have a label printer that will only work if it is plugged in directly to the computer. The manual specifically states not to plug it in to a hub. I tried three hubs and the device isn't even detected unless it is plugged directly into the computer.
While I hope that whoever wrote the driver for this device has since been forced out of the software development business and is now messing up my drive through order at McDonalds, I know that if I ever have a computer with a single USB port I'm going to run into another device like this.

Asus doesn't "build" computers :) Foxconn does. And also does Apple and Intel gear (AFAIK). And on the laptop market, at least some years ago, Quanta (Taiwan) had allegedly assembled 30% of all the sold laptops. You can usually spot this by checking the MAC address on the ethernet card (see http://www.coffer.com/mac_find... ).

They may not have built the entire system, but the system board has 'ASUS' written all over it.
