Comment Inaccurate wiimote description (Score 5, Informative) 187

The statement "The Wiimote only knows which direction you're moving the controller" is not accurate, The Wiimote has a three axis accelerometer in addition to an infrared camera. The camera looks for two infrared LEDs on the "sensor bar" and depending on the distance between the LEDs and their position in the image from the camera the Wiiremote can fairly accurately determine where it is pointed on the screen.

Comment We Hire New Programmers (Score 1) 540

I have no degree and had no professional programming experience before I started at my current job. I apparently showed enough skill on the programming test alone. That was eight years ago. Now I am the assistant director of the department. We have a few spots open for competent c programmers in the Beaumont, Texas area. We develop in a unix-like environment and occasionally travel. Check out C&D Robotics and call before sending a resume.

Cisco worked closely with Duke and Apple to identify the source of this problem, which was caused by a Cisco-based network issue. Cisco has provided a fix that has been applied to Duke's network and there have been no recurrences of the problem since.

John H. Doe writes: "The search engine to be would be called Wikiasari, and would rely on the crowd mentality to go head to head with those giants Google and Yahoo. Could it be possible that relevance would be better served by the meatspace than cyberintuition?"

Submission + - wii kiosks require credit card as collateral

An anonymous reader writes: When I was at the local EB games I noticed something strange, their wii kiosk was turned off. In addition, no controller was present. After asking about it, an employee told me that EB games does not allow people to play their wii kiosks unless they provide a name and a credit card. He says this is to prevent theft of the wireless controller. So there it remains Wii unit turned off and missing the controller. What happens to kids who don't have a credit card? Could this hurt sales, and why don't they fix this problem? Will other retailers adopt a similiar stance? Why not simply have a tethered controller for the kiosks?

Submission + - A vaccine to prevent every strain of flu?

Shivetya writes: British scientists may have come up with a vaccine that can prevent every type of Influenza A by concentrating on a protien known as M2. This protein has hardly changed within the last 100 years and has been found in the current bird flu and the virus that caused the 1918 Spanish flu. The story, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/hea lth/healthmain.html?in_article_id=425227&in_page_i d=1774 , also reports a Swiss group doing similar research. Combine this story and recent ones on Slashdot concerning diabetes, http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/12/1 6/218236 , perhaps this decade will see to the end of some of the worlds most vexing health problems?

The NSFW HTML Attribute 273

phaln writes "Over at The Frosty Mug Revolution, PJ Doland makes a compelling case for a new HTML attribute in the spirit of the highly-regarded 'nofollow' attribute promoted by Google — the NSFW attribute (rel='nsfw'). His original idea has been refined and expanded by positive comments from readers, resulting in a semantic solution to the issue he raises in the original post. From the article: 'Content creators can apply the attribute to paragraph tags, div tags, or any other block-level element. Doing so will indicate that the enclosed content is not safe for work. Visitors will be able to configure their browsers to block display of just the content enclosed by the flagged block-level element. This isn't about censorship. It is about making us all less likely to accidentally click on a goatse.cx link when our boss is standing behind us. It is also about making us feel more comfortable posting possibly objectionable content by giving visitors a means of easily filtering that content.'"
