Another Calgarian here, we have no large bodies of water nearby so our summers are silly hot and our winters are true Canadian cold. Half the year everything is covered in snow the other half you'll be sweating like a dog. To top it all off the city was designed for cars, it's all suburbs right up to the down town core. Sure you could make it on a bike but it would be a lot harder than it should be. PS: While 1 hour to the university from the south is accurate its not THAT much long than what the high schoolers spend on the bus.
