From a national security standpoint, I'm more concerned with Pakistan than Iran, NK, or anyone else. The majority of experts agree that the most likely national security threat to the US (I'm talking about academics and foreign policy experts, not politicians) is the potential for a radical element to get its hands on Paki nukes. Iran doesn't even have the bomb yet, but we keep on focusing on them, in the meantime, Pakistan has enough material to produce 60 to 100 weapons grade nukes...

Being a motorcycle rider (not crotchrockets, but I'm not one of those that disparages them to feel smugly superior) I constantly find myself getting quite angry at the irresponsibility of drivers in America. Particularly in a college town, I think people have far too little respect for vehicles, seeing as traffic accidents are over 4% (varies from year to year) of fatalities in the US. People need to realize they are driving a 2 ton bullet that can kill people in the blink of an eye. Some simple measures, such as much stricter testing like the Germans (and hence better education about driving), and things like a couple seconds more pause between a red light in one direction and a green in the other could drastically reduce these injuries. Instead you get things like some local and private company installing red light cameras, who then convince the city to shorten yellow lights, and cause more accidents than happened in the first place. It all boils down to money, so I feel the only way to improve it is to somehow convince people and the companies involved in the transportation industry that safety is more profitable than not... /rant off

Having spent some time in Germany, the thing that makes the autobahn safer compared to the US, is primarily one law. You have to be as far on the right side of the road as possible. Pass someone? Ok, get back over into the right hand lane. Big trucks have to stay in the far right lane all the time except to pass. And you WILL get pulled over for not doing it. It creates a safer more efficient flow of traffic people need to learn in the states.

I'm a USMC OIF combat vet that has suffered from PTSD. I can barely survive the fourth of July, but games like ARMA II are surprisingly cathartic for me, and have helped de-stress me when symptoms raise their ugly heads. This move is insulting to the principle for which military people stand for. I swore an oath to one thing, and one thing only, that being the constitution. By disrespecting the constitution and the freedoms that come with it, moves like this are counter-productive to the forward movement of the evolution of American values in modern society. This is why I have a somewhat strange idea. That the most likely way we are going to see radical change (for the better or worse) is by "sleeper" politicians, who are able to rise to spots of power and once reaching that point, if not being completely changed in the process of infiltration, start using their position to utilize things such as the "riders" to insert something. It becomes complicated and convoluted though, questions about morality, practicality etc. of such schemes are quickly raised and not easily put down. The likelihood of this is extremely low, but it is at the very least a slightly entertaining, if not frightening, thought.

Actually, one of the over 6 definitions of journalism I read was " writing characterized by a direct presentation of facts or description of events without an attempt at interpretation " Minus the apache video (of which it should be noted they released BOTH and unedited and edited version) Wikileaks does just this. They may not be as journalistic as say, the NYT, but at the very least provide journalistic value to the rest of the news media. What I find beautiful about the internet as opposed to TV as a source of news is that I can follow a link, that leads to an article, that references a report, that quotes an actual document that can often be found and verified if one were so inclined. We can take out the middlemen, but without the will to read real news (one criteria I like to use is the question "Will this still be important 20 years from now?) people will still stay in their own little medieval worlds.
