Submission + - Flaws Found In Neutrino Speed Experiment? (wsj.com)

OverTheGeicoE writes: A malfunctioning cable may have been responsible for the claim that some particles may be able to travel faster than light speed, a potentially embarrassing outcome for physicists who had publicized the findings with great fanfare just a few months ago. CERN says it had identified two possible effects that could have affected the experiment: one relates to an oscillator used to provide time stamps for estimating particle speeds, and a possible glitch in a fiber-optic cable. 'If this is the case, it could have led to an underestimate of the time of flight of the neutrinos,' CERN said in a one-paragraph 'update' posted on its website. It plans new measurements in May.

I wish I had some mod points, because this should be +5 Insightful! Locking the cabin doors would have prevented 9/11 and will prevent further 9/11s from happening should someone try again.

I disagree. In fact the locking cabin doors worked against the passengers of united 93. The problem wasn't locking cabin doors it was the 'response to hijacking' protocol. Pre-9/11 we gave the plane to the terrorist once they held a box cutter to the flight attendants throat, let them carry out their demands, which was usually to fly to cuba or something. Post and even during 9/11 we don't give up the plane at all costs, because if we do we're all dead via flying into a stationary object.

The problem and solution of 9/11 was taken care of on 9/11. When the phones were sold, the carriers would have used the future earnings from these phones to offset the initial discount. Now they cannot make that money Somewhat unfair isnt it?

You're still in a contract with the carrier so they get their subsidized money back. This just means when you're done with your contract you can take your phone with you to another carrier.

Submission + - Bipartisan Internet Sales Tax Bill Introduced (itworld.com)

jfruhlinger writes: "Four senators, including both Democrats and Republicans, have introduced a bill that would allow (but not require) states to collect sales tax on items purchased by residents online, even the seller has no physical presence in that state. Sellers would be able to pay through either the existing Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement or a new alternative tax simplification plan. Battle lines are being drawn predictably: brick-and-mortar retailers love the idea, Internet-only sellers hate it."

I never had to worry if I was joining a server with stacked teams built to run up their rankings, and I never had to worry if the game was lying about how many players were actually on their server. In MW2 I just click play and a minute or two later I'm playing. Maybe my computer is at the center of the internet because I very rarely had connection issues. Having played both, if I had to pick I'd take the MW2 matchmaking system any day.

I took my credit card off my itunes account a while ago after I started hearing stories on the news of kids running up huge bills and what a nightmare it is to get Apple to act. I can still "buy" the free games, and I don't have to worry about my kid accidentally selecting something that costs money. On the rare occasion that I do want to buy something from Apple it prompts me for payment information and I just have to enter in my credit card information.

This has the added bonus of preventing someone from discovering your username and password and running up a huge bill.
