Hacker Destroys Avsim.com, Along With Its Backups 780

el americano writes "Flight Simulator community website Avsim has experienced a total data loss after both of their online servers were hacked. The site's founder, Tom Allensworth, explained why 13 years of community developed terrains, skins, and mods will not be restored from backups: 'Some have asked whether or not we had back ups. Yes, we dutifully backed up our servers every day. Unfortunately, we backed up the servers between our two servers. The hacker took out both servers, destroying our ability to use one or the other back up to remedy the situation.'"

Court Orders Breathalyzer Code Opened, Reveals Mess 707

Death Metal writes with an excerpt from the website of defense attorney Evan Levow: "After two years of attempting to get the computer based source code for the Alcotest 7110 MKIII-C, defense counsel in State v. Chun were successful in obtaining the code, and had it analyzed by Base One Technologies, Inc. By making itself a party to the litigation after the oral arguments in April, Draeger subjected itself to the Supreme Court's directive that Draeger ultimately provide the source code to the defendants' software analysis house, Base One. ... Draeger reviewed the code, as well, through its software house, SysTest Labs, which agreed with Base One, that the patchwork code that makes up the 7110 is not written well, nor is it written to any defined coding standard. SysTest said, 'The Alcotest NJ3.11 source code appears to have evolved over numerous transitions and versioning, which is responsible for cyclomatic complexity.'" Bruce Schneier comments on the same report and neatly summarizes the take-away lesson: "'You can't look at our code because we don't want you to' simply isn't good enough."

DOSBox Sees Continued Success 271

KingofGnG writes "DOSBox, the emulator designed to run DOS games on modern operating systems (and not necessarily on a PC), has been chosen as project of the month for May on SourceForge. It's the latest award granted to a piece of software that 'simply does what it is supposed to do,' as the authors say. After having amassed more than 10 million downloads, it will soon be getting an update that's been awaited for almost two years."

I live in Greensboro, and frankly, this just irks me to no end. I work in IT, I've negotiated high capacity circuit contracts with telecom carriers. This is just such an insane markup that its crazy. You could practically exceed their 5 GB cap just with BACKGROUND traffic on some of their larger broadcast subnets. (Think larger then a /24.)

I'm thinking I should just start a WISP. With their logic, with just a T1 line, I could make a crap load of money.

I'm really quite upset with how many of my favorite XM stations are now their serius counterparts instead of what was there... I was a big fan of Squizz, Ethel, Fred, now we have the closest thing Sirius had to the content, and frankly its far from the same. How in the hell do you go from RATM to Ozzy? And why in the !@#$ do I have to listen to some DJ talk about his other show?!? The rock stations just... suck.

I went shopping for FM transmitters for my iPod last night.

To be honest, I want a giant undo button and I want XM back. I'm likely going to drop the service though, which is sad because its a great idea.... at least I have BPM for now.
