Comment IBM is a global business (Score 2, Insightful) 812

This has nothing to do with socialism, tax structure, or unregulated capitalism. IBM has stopped to innovate, the only way they can show any profits is by screwing over its employees with no long term strategy in place. They want to look good next quarter, and that is all they care about. The only way they can show any profits is by shifting their work force to cheaper labor markets. They have nothing new to sell, just have to maintain existing crap.

Comment fair comparison ? (Score 3, Informative) 132

I am not sure if it is fair to compare Ubuntu Jaunty with Fedora, IIRC RHEL is a stable release so is Ubuntu Jaunty, and fedora is more like a dev release that tracks upstream closely. Similarly, Ubuntu Karmic is the dev version that tracks upstream closely before a stable cut of it is released. So probably comparing fedora to Ubuntu Karmic is a fair comparison.

Comment MSFT has no original ideas (Score 2, Interesting) 493

In an interview Steve Jobs said of msft, that msft is a company with no original ideas. I think it is the same even today, but there is one difference. We had Bill Gate who always looks calm and composed, although in reality he is supposed to be really annoying person, and we have SteveO who runs up and down a stage screaming, and had to have throat surgery after screaming "developers developers developers", he is really on some kind of crack. I think in few years msft will turn into a litigation house, like sco they will go down as a technology company that puts out more law suites than any new technology. msft under gates was a marketing company with a very strong arm & huge muscles. Under steveO it will soon turn into a law firm with huge muscles & small a d***.

From the question and all the comments above, it is clear that the focus of one going to university is not education or knowledge but ROI. If you really want to make great returns you don't need any degree, many of the business owners I know dont even have high school. But, if you are really interested in gaining more knowledge then go for your MS. MS degree should add more weight when when you apply for a job, and when you switch jobs. Also, it will help you when you see a leadership position within any large corp. Also, some of the more influential friends I made were my classmates from my MS program :)

So go for it if you genuinely feel like you need to learn more, its not all about ROI, it should be really about knowledge and experience you gain from your MS program.

Obviously the guy who wrote this article is not a programmer, he is a liberal arts major and knows a little about the crisis... nice interesting read.
I did not like the fact that he claimed that he was over paid all along his career, and compared the work done by some oyster farmer to being harder than a computer programmer, sounded more like a pol-pot fan.
