There's far more to a good workstation than just raw hardware. Where Apple excels is in their OS. They've managed to craft it in a way that just makes using it better to get shit done (this is coming from someone who was an avid Windows then Linux user in his younger days).

I myself prefer Debian (and it's derivatives), however there was/is a real need to run a RedHat-compatible OS in a production environment that's compatible with binary-only drivers that were supplied and only supported on RHEL (think stuff like EMC PowerPath, OCFS2 filesystem (the specific version(s) compatible with Oracle RDMS, etc). For those that don't need the support offered by RedHat (aside from access to their Yum repos), something like CentOS was a perfect fit and served us well.

I think you're confusing Cydia with Installer.app, which was there before the App Store. However, Cydia came about around the same time that the App Store made it's appearance, which was with iPhone OS 2.0 I believe.

I second this. I put a Hauppauge digital 4-tuner card into my Linux server and use RPi's running OpenElec (with the TVHeadend plugin) for the frontend to do this. It works great, and as a bonus I can VPN into my network remotely and access TV programming on my phone for free.
