These converter boxes will be needed by February 2009 in order to receive free, over-the-air digital television broadcasts. Without a digital converter box, your existing analog television will not be able to receive any over-the-air television broadcasts. There is a limited number of coupons available, so act fast if you want to take advantage. You can also check my blog for more details at williambryson.blogspot.com.

Good luck!"

Submission + - Fusion-io's ioDrive starts at $2,400

Harry writes: "Finally Fusion-io's oh-so-fast ioDrive PCIe card got a price tag. The 640GB flash-based storage card will set you for only about $2400 when it hits the market in early Q1 2008. The card could be a good buy for industrial application as it offers RAM like performance, power of 1000 hard drives, and performance of a multi-rack disk array in a single PCIe card."

Submission + - Aluminum Pellets As Alternative Fuel

s31523 writes: "As gas prices in the US creep towards $4.00 a gallon, there is more focus on alternative fuels. Researchers at Purdue University have created a system that generates hydrogen "on demand" using pellets made from pure aluminum and gallium. The gallium prevents a "skin" from forming and allows the aluminum to react with oxygen to form hydrogen and aluminum oxide. Although this reaction leaves behind aluminum oxide, which can be recycled, it solves the problem of stabilizing hydrogen. According to Purdue, this new method combines two methods of creating hydrogen, both of which have flaws that make them impractical, but combining the two seems to solve many of the problems."

Submission + - Planet could harbor Life

BlueMorpho writes: "Planet of Promise: Small, Rocky World Could Harbor Life

For the first time, astronomers have discovered a planet far, far away that might be similar to Earth. This distant world, which pirouettes around a dim bulb of a star with the unglamorous name Gliese 581, may possibly sport a landscape that would be vaguely familiar to us — a panorama of liquid oceans and drifting continents. If so, there's the chance that it's a home to life — perhaps even advanced life.

Submission + - China moving to petaflop supercomputing lead 2010

nanotrends writes: "China is moving to the front of the petaflop supercomputing race by going for at least two, most probably three, Petaflop supercomputers by 2010. Those machines will be part of the ChinaGrid of Supercomputers, which should have 40 nodes by 2010. The United States may have two petaflop supercomputers (Roadrunner and Blue Gene/C) at that time and petaflop computing from the Folding@home project. Japan will probably also have two petaflop supercomputers. The existing special purpose MD-Grape3 and another machine. There will also be many 100+ Teraflop class supercomputers. There will be several more advanced versions of high speed national grids connecting the supercomputers."
