Man Hides Castle Behind Hay Bales

A UK farmer built an entire mock castle and kept it hidden behind bales of hay for 4 years to avoid building regulations. The builder wants to take advantage of a provision of planning law that allows buildings without planning permission to be declared legal if no objections have been made after four years. The county council is not happy and is moving their mock seige weaponry towards the farm.

Submission + - Thin Client Solutions

notaspunkymonkey writes: I work for a company which is looking at implementing a thin client solution for our office based workers; and was wondering what the slashdot crowd have used, or have experiance with, and what works the best.

Here comes the snag.. we have a vast enterprise all geared up to use Microsoft Products, and the powers that be have no plans to change this at all — I know there are dozens of solutions out there, just wondering what type of solution works best.

Linux recommendations are welcomed anyway — as I would like to be able to offer open source alternatives to each Windows recommendation in the hope that they realise the money that can be saved, and the Kudos which could be earned with our more Open Source friendly clients.

Salary Negotiation for an IT Position? 149

HerculesMO asks: "I am a Windows Systems Administrator and work for a pretty large corporation. I know that I'm underpaid for what I do, and as such, I've been looking for another position. The problem is however, that a lot of potential positions ask for what you are currently making -- and it's a bargaining chip that the company I interview with will (and have) used to negotiate salary." Given that businesses usually base the salaries of new hires on their previous job, how can one arrange a fair salary if they were badly underpaid?

Low Voltage Power Distribution? 237

thesp asks: "As I look around my apartment, I am continually struck by the plethora of high-voltage AC to low-voltage DC power adapters I use to power my various devices. At a recent estimate, around 30% of the power consumed in my house is via these adapters. From my laptop to my digital music player, and from my mobile telephone to my PDA, each device is down-converting its own power through its own adapter. Double this number to include my partner's devices. Many of these run hot, and are inconvenient to remove/replug to conserve power and outlets. Does Slashdot know of any moves to standardize power delivery to such devices, or of hobby/home-brew projects to distribute low-voltage power from a central power converter? Alternatively, are there reasons as to why this would not be a simple and effective solution to the proliferation of wall-warts."
