Lastly people, after you buy one, don't forget to format them with truecrypt, before you dump any files on them. I don't want to see my medical records or SIN number find its way to the unattended StarBucks coffee table.

So you think we have your medical records on our flash drives? Interesting.

I agree absolutely that you should not call it unlimited bandwidth if you don't plan to honor it. And as you point out the current trend is larger quality services. But if this requires more expensive networks, someone somewhere must pay for this. Capping and some kind of pay-by-volume could both be a part of the equation.

Technically it's an interesting idea. It might even work.

It should suffice to store photographs of the audience taken during screening. The cameras seem to already be in place, from what I understand. Add audio or visual watermarking for detecting the cinema and time.
Add automatic facial recognition to the setup, and the guy will be caught next time he goes to such a cinema (or the poor sod who happened to sit beside him at the time of the recording).

To act as a deterrent, movie goers would have to be aware of the system. But all in all, it would be invisible to the paying customer (apart from the fact that it would go into the ticket price).

Cornell University FPGA Class Projects for 2008 112

Matt writes "The new crop of Cornell University ECE 5760 projects are now online. Some really cool projects, as well as the previous two years' worth of projects." Since it's mid-December, many other schools, too, have either just let out or are about to; can you point to any other online collections of cool technical projects?

Soyuz With Richard Garriott Successfully Launched 56

Toren Altair writes "Soyuz TMA-13 with ISS Expedition Crew 18 and Richard Garriott successfully launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome at 7:01 UT (3:01 EDT). The Soyuz capsule will dock to the ISS in two days. Garriott will return to Earth with Expedition 17 crew members, Commander Sergei Volkov and Flight Engineer Oleg Kononenko on October 23." With the extra attention on this launch, the Russians have gone out of their way to say that the return of the Soyuz vehicle will be safe, after a couple of different malfunctions in the past year. Garriott is in space partly for recreation, and partly as a promotion for his latest MMO, Tabula Rasa. He took with him a hard drive filled with information about humanity, as well as DNA sequences from Tabula Rasa players and various celebrities (including Stephen Colbert and Stephen Hawking) to 'preserve' that data in case of a disaster on Earth. Garriott will also spend time running and participating in experiments. Coverage of the Soyuz mission is ongoing at NASATV.

EU/Microsoft Antitrust Case Delves Into Tech 181

oscartheduck writes "ZDNet is reporting on the Microsoft/EU case, and things aren't going too well for the software giant. The Commission is delving deeply into the technical issues surrounding the case. In addition to 'a record $617 million' that may well be leveled against the American monopolist, Microsoft is also standing accused of knowingly going forward with marketing practices 'that had already been judged illegal by U.S. courts when it was used on Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.'" More from the article: " The founder of the Samba team of developers, which took years to create print and file server software that works with Windows, said his team is held back and playing catch-up. 'The tiny device I have here in the palm of my hand is the sort of product that could emerge if the information required by the Commission were available,' Andrew Tridgell said, holding a paperback-size storage server that he said could be turned into a work group server. Once it gives over the information, 'Microsoft no longer has a stranglehold over the world's networks,' he said. "
