Comment Meh (Score 1) 578

So don't watch the games.

If a supplier sets their price, it's up to the customer to evaluate if the product is worth the money. I dumped my television altogether a decade ago and don't miss it at all (I do pay the ridiculous german fee for my radios though, since I value listening to the radio). Sportsbars and friend's houses are better options for watching sports anyway.

Yes, he hast to throw a fit.

It is a fit against an internet that gets dumber every day; that promotes consumption against creativity. This is not the internet the old-school is used to. Sure commercialization of the web made it what it is, popular and all, but dumbing it down to extremes just makes it yet another worthless aspect of everyday life instead of a platform for communication and creativity.

Slashdot is one of the last popular resorts for people of this kind. Now, the problem is, maybe the Slashdot owners don't want to have techies on the site; they want the teens who know no better to click on the ads. That's just fine, but it will make a lot of people sad and will mark the end of an era. The fit is not really about what the site owners should do with their property, it is against the end of that era.

Comment Damn, this could have been an interesting topic (Score 5, Insightful) 249

I was very interesting in reading what the slashdot crowd would have to say on this topic and on the opinion of Woz. However:
1. The slashdot crowd is too pissed of with Beta, so all they do is keep complaining about it, and,
2. If they didn't complain and Beta was rolled out in silence then I would still not be able to read what the slashdot crowd had to say on the comment of Woz, because the discussion section of Beta sucks.

So, pretty please, with sugar on top, take back the fucking Beta.

Comment Disfunctional interface (Score 1) 60

As others pointed out, nobody needs the extra empty space, both around the comments and on the right hand-side, which is obviously room for ads, but is just annoying, making the discussion thread ridiculously long. The non-white background is horrible: reduces contrast and makes everything hard to read. Also, the moderation threshold adjustment is practically gone: You can have all comments (ain't got no time fo' dat!) or practically nothing on the screen. The moderation category filtering was maybe a good idea, but very poorly implemented: if you click on e.g. "insightful" and a thread starts with a reply, there is no way to get the parent comment (and no hope to make sense of what is being said). The same applies if you adjust the level by clicking on the geared wheel (which is an excellent burial place for this feature...). Moreover, there are no comments reduced to single-line entries, so you cannot really skim all information. I have often found interesting comments buried in the 2ish category that I only noticed because they appeared as single-line comments. Now I get +5 and 0 comments together, and the zero-comment has tons of whitespace around it, too!

I don't care what you do with the front page, the header and the footer. Hell, I would even put up with commercials between the treads (it would even help separating the threads), but don't mess with the comment section in such horrible ways. You could add the facebook, twitter, goodle+ and linked-in buttons without creating that abomination, IMHO.

Comment Here's my POV on Beta (Score 4, Insightful) 221

I got a message urging me to try it, so I clicked on it, looked at the Beta and thought: oh, this looks like Slashdot on my phone. And clicked back to the original interface after only a short while. Learn a lesson from Win8: Interfaces that look good on a phone, are crap for a desktop.

I mean, you have people on this site that actually believe that a CLI is a superior interface. And you try to impress them with eye-candy that takes functionality away? Goodluckwiththat.

What were you guys thinking?

Submission + - Slashdot BETA Discussion (slashdot.org) 60

mugnyte writes: With Slashdot's recent restyled "BETA" slowly rolled to most users, there's been a lot of griping about the changes. This is nothing new, as past style changes have had similar effects. However, this pass there are significant usability changes: A narrower read pane, limited moderation filtering, and several color/size/font adjustments. BETA implies not yet complete, so taking that cue — please list your specific, detailed opinoins, one per comment, and let's use the best part of slashdot (the moderation system) to raise the attention to these. Change can be jarring, but let's focus on the true usability differences with the new style.
