Submission + - Why Discord is switching from Go to Rust

RoccamOccam writes: The developers at Discord have seen success with Rust on their video encoding pipeline for Go Live and on their Elixir NIFs' server. Recently, they've penned a post explaining how they have drastically improved the performance of a service by switching its implementation from Go to Rust.

From the post, "Remarkably, we had only put very basic thought into optimization as the Rust version was written. Even with just basic optimization, Rust was able to outperform the hyper hand-tuned Go version. This is a huge testament to how easy it is to write efficient programs with Rust compared to the deep dive we had to do with Go."

Submission + - Facebook Had Much Bigger Part than Parler in Capitol Riot

RoccamOccam writes: The Department of Justice has now charged 223 people for their participation in the events of Jan. 6. A comprehensive analysis of those charging documents performed by Forbes demonstrate that Parler’s role was minimal, compared to that of Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

Of the 223 charging documents, 73 reference posts on Facebook as evidence, 24 reference posts YouTube, 20 single out Instagram posts (owned by Facebook), and only eight highlight posts on Parler.

In the immediate aftermath, Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s chief operating officer, claimed “These events were largely organized on platforms that don’t have our abilities to stop hate and don’t have our standards and don’t have our transparency.”

Submission + - Facebook blocks news-sharing in Australia (nypost.com)

RoccamOccam writes: From The New York Post: "Facebook said Wednesday it is banning Australian users from reading or sharing news on its platform.

The stunning announcement, which came just hours after News Corp. and Google unveiled an agreement in which the search giant would pay the media company to run news on its platform, was in response to Australia’s proposed new Media Bargaining law, which would require tech giants to make such payments.

Facebook’s decision means Australian news publishers will no longer be able to share stories on the social media site, and international news won’t be visible or shareable by local Facebook users, while overseas Facebook users also won’t be able to read or share Australian content. "

Submission + - ''The Mandalorian' star Gina Carano fired by Lucasfilm (hollywoodreporter.com)

RoccamOccam writes: "Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."

The post causing the controversy was "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors... even by children... Because history is edited, most people today don't realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?"

Submission + - 5% Work-From-Home Tax Proposed 4

RoccamOccam writes: Deutsche Bank unveiled a new report Tuesday that said people who choose to work from home should be taxed 5% of their salary, with the revenue generated going to help people who cannot work from home.

From the paper: "As Joe Biden prepares to take office in the US, it is clear that parts of our system are preparing for change whether in the US, Europe, or elsewhere. One pressing necessity highlighted by the pandemic is the need to redistribute from the older to younger generations.

"Working from home will be part of the ‘new normal’ well after the pandemic has passed. We argue that remote workers should pay a tax for the privilege. Our calculations suggest the amounts raised could fund material income subsidies for low-income earners who are unable to work remotely and thus assume more ‘old economy’ and health risks."

Submission + - Twitter, Facebook censor Post over Hunter Biden exposé 22

RoccamOccam writes: The New York Post reports that "both Twitter and Facebook took extraordinary censorship measures against The Post on Wednesday over its exposés about Hunter Biden’s emails — and leveled baseless accusations that the reports used 'hacked materials.'"

The suppression effort came despite presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign merely denying that he had anything on his “official schedules” about meeting a Ukrainian energy executive in 2015 — along with zero claims that his son’s computer had been hacked.

The Intercept’s Lee Fang wrote, “The Biden campaign isn't disputing the authenticity of the Hunter Biden emails. If the story is fabricated, there might be justification for limiting it in some way, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.”

Submission + - Voter Fraud: 1,000 Cases of 'Double-Voting' Found in Georgia (ajc.com)

RoccamOccam writes: Georgia's Secretary of State announced that 1,000 Georgians voted twice in the state’s June 9 primary, a felony that he said will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The Georgia attorney general’s office and local prosecutors will decide whether to bring charges following investigations on a case-by-case basis, Raffensperger said.

Double-voting is a felony in Georgia, punishable by one to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $100,000, he said.

Submission + - FBI discussed interviewing Michael Flynn 'to get him to lie' and 'get him fired' (foxnews.com)

RoccamOccam writes: Explosive new internal FBI documents unsealed Wednesday show that top bureau officials discussed their motivations for interviewing then-national security adviser Michael Flynn in the White House in January 2017 — and openly questioned if their "goal" was "to get him to lie, so we can prosecute him or get him fired."

The handwritten notes — written by the FBI's former head of counterintelligence Bill Priestap after a meeting with then-FBI Director James Comey and then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Fox News is told — further suggested that agents planned in the alternative to get Flynn "to admit to breaking the Logan Act."

The Logan Act is an obscure statute that has never been used in a criminal prosecution; enacted in 1799 in an era before telephones, it was intended to prevent individuals from falsely claiming to represent the United States government while abroad.

Submission + - U.S. Space Force's First Weapon Is a Satellite Jammer

RoccamOccam writes: The United States Space force now has offensive power, though it might not be the massive orbiting weapons system that you're envisioning.

The new weapons system delivered to the space force is a jammer type array that can prevent military or intelligence combatants from accessing their military satellites. This functionality allows the space force to neutralize orbiting satellites in a matter of minutes.

Submission + - CNN and/or Google Deleted Episode w Biden Accuser's Mother 2

RoccamOccam writes: It appears, that CNN or Google has attempted to scrub the 1993 Larry King episode that featured Tara Reade’s mother from Google Play, which hosted archives of the show.

The episodes have been renumbered so there’s no break in the sequence, but as can be seen by the actual dates that an episode is missing. It just so happens to be the very one during which Tara Reade’s mother called in, nearly 30 years ago. In the exchange, you can hear Reade’s mother talking about her daughter having an issue with a Senator, on the very same day Reade says she was disciplined for pushing back on Joe Biden’s abuse.

Neither CNN nor Google immediately responded to Fox News’ requests for comment. Fox News also reached out to the representation of Larry King and have not heard a response.

Submission + - How a stockpile of 39 million masks was exposed as fake (latimes.com)

RoccamOccam writes: Sounding similar to claim made by Robert X. Cringely, a powerful California union that claimed to have discovered 39 million masks for healthcare workers fighting the novel coronavirus was duped in an elaborate scam uncovered by FBI investigators, the U.S. attorney’s office said Friday.

At one point, the Australian broker told the middleman in Pittsburgh that 2 million masks were located in a warehouse in Georgia and that the product had been inspected by a particular certification company.

That, U.S. Atty. Scott Brady of the Western District of Pennsylvania said, “was also part of the ruse.”

Submission + - Chinese-Backed Company Raids Australia's Medical Supplies, Ships Them to China

RoccamOccam writes: As the coronavirus took hold in Wuhan earlier this year, staff from the Chinese government-backed global property giant Greenland Group were instructed to put their normal work on hold and source bulk supplies of essential medical items to ship back to China.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a whistleblower from the company has told the Herald it was a worldwide Greenland effort — and the Sydney office was no different, sourcing bulk supplies of surgical masks, thermometers, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitisers, gloves and Panadol for shipping.

Submission + - U.S., China strike partial trade deal that cuts tariffs (politico.com)

RoccamOccam writes: The tentative agreement, which Trump refers to as “phase one” deal, codifies what was agreed to in principle in October. It will require China to significantly increase its purchases of U.S. agricultural goods, open its financial services sector and enact new intellectual property protections.

In exchange, Trump will cancel a 15 percent tariff that was scheduled for Sunday, people briefed on the matter said. The president is also expected to reduce duty rates already in place on about $250 billion worth of goods, including many consumer items such as footwear, clothing and flat panel TVs.

Submission + - Seattle Public Schools Introduce "K-12 Math Ethnic Studies" 2

RoccamOccam writes: The Seattle Public School System in August introduced a new curriculum for K-12 Math Ethnic Studies that covers “Origins, Identity, and Agency,” "Power and Oppression, and "History of Resistance and Liberation."

According to the framework, "Origins, Identity and Agency" are the ways in which we view ourselves as mathematicians and members of broader mathematical communities. Mathematical theory and application is rooted in the ancient histories of people and empires of color. All human endeavors include mathematical thinking; from humanities to the arts to the sciences.

"Power and Oppression" are the ways in which individuals and groups define mathematical knowledge so as to see "Western" mathematics as the only legitimate expression of mathematical identity and intelligence. This definition of legitimacy is then used to disenfranchise people and communities of color. This erases the historical contributions of people and communities of color.

Submission + - Project Veritas Slaps Pinterest With Cease And Desist

RoccamOccam writes: As reported by Townhall.com, Project Veritas, the investigative journalist group, on Tuesday slapped Pinterest with a cease and desist letter. Pinterest allegedly went around to other social media sites, reporting Project Veritas' expose on Pinterest censoring conservatives and pro-life causes.

"It has come to our attention that Pinterest contacted a variety of social media platforms, alerting them, falsely, that the news piece constituted 'malicious use' due to 'doxing, dogpiling, brigading, spamming, or scamming.' As a result, Project Veritas witnessed its report disappear on platforms including YouTube," the letter read.
