Comment It affects my tax returns! (Score 1) 240

1. I calculate my personal and corporation tax using four digit decimals (with a two digit Pound/Penny (or Dollar/Cent)system this seems ok)
2 Her Majesties Revenue & Customs sometimes calculates to two decimals and sometimes does not in the same tax calculation.
3. Hence having paid my estimate of due tax, I have got demands for one penny to four pennies sent by post (cost say 15 pound to Revenue to issue pay or punishment warning letter) or face punishment and fines. I duly pay one penny at local Post Office in cash, who charge HMRC 4 pounds or so to transmit the penny due. They (the Post Office staffers) laugh and say this is a very regular occurrence. Thus penny rounding error costs HMRC say 19 or 20 pounds of spend to collect. It would appear they cannot just 'not balance the books and not collect' [computer instruction in calculation to disregard sums due of less than xx pennies] due to stringency of reporting to parliament they have done all possible to collect due tax. 1. I act for a UK organization which has similar restrictions for handling Export Controlled matters & 'Classified' matters. These are not the same. The users and any intermediaries need to be known and locked down.
2. if "Cloud" storage for access from remote computer, then the store for both of above had better be within your own location and control and under your own domain, never under a 'third party external service' on remote servers to which you have no physical access.
3. ITAR and its equivalent UK Export Control restrict some things, 'Classified' by any government restricts other things. However the penalties are very severe for bad practice.
4. You have a problem if any person would access your servers from outside the USA, as internet access passes through non USA systems. If you and all your staff ONLY work within the USA then this is possible, but note, ITAR does allow staff to take laptops home, Classified (depending on level) does not allow staff to leave the locked building with any laptop or copy (USBs anyone?). The nationality or birth of any person outside the USA may forbid you having them in any chain that allows corporate computer access.
Example: The company I advise has some senior USA staff, I have to control that they have no access whatsoever or knowledge of certain UK EYES ONLY level matters.
Keep 'cloud' internal to USA (i.e. refuse and block all foreign incoming and outgoing signals). Check parentage of all staff. You have your work cut out!

Submission + - Oldest lunar calendar found in Scotland

eionmac writes: The BBC in UK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-23286928 publishes news that Archaeologists believe they have discovered the world's oldest lunar "calendar" in an Aberdeenshire field. Excavations of a field at Crathes Castle found a series of 12 pits which appear to mimic the phases of the moon and track lunar months. A team led by the University of Birmingham suggests the ancient monument was created by hunter-gatherers about 10,000 years ago. The pit alignment, at Warren Field, was first excavated in 2004. The experts who analysed the pits said they may have contained a wooden post. The Mesolithic "calendar" is thousands of years older than previous known formal time-measuring monuments created in Mesopotamia. The analysis has been published in the journal, Internet Archaeology

Comment No UK VAT FOSS bookkeeping program (Score 1) 26

My question.
Part1 history. While developing many other facets of Gnu/Linux so that most small companies can use FOSS to totally run their business, the lack of a FOSS UK or EU VAT system of bookkeeping keeps small start ups 'locked' into Windows as there they have the relevant accounting/bookkeeping programs. (GnuCash is OK for personal accounts, useless for UK or EU VAT systems).
Part 2 Question: Is any effort being made to solve this as it would allow start ups to be independent of Windows.
There are some paid Linux bookkeeping systems but that is off putting to start ups.

Try to teach and show first of all:

1, Use of a Live Linux (puppy, Knoppix, OpenSuse, Mint)
It will save a lot of things including those who do not back up their thesis work, as recovery from a dead MS Windows machine by Knoppix use is al ive saver.

2. Then discuss show how to dual boot machines

Then folk will take to Linux

3. The saving stuff from non booting MS Windows machines is a very good introduction to Linux for students, staff and others as it gives great confidence in use of Linux systems ,even if unable to code or develop for systems.
