eLEGS Exoskeleton Allows Paraplegics To Walk 56

Zothecula writes "At a press conference held recently in San Francisco, California's Berkeley Bionics unveiled its eLEGS exoskeleton. The computer-controlled device is designed to be worn by paraplegics, providing the power and support to get them out of their wheelchairs, into a standing posture, and walking – albeit with the aid of crutches. The two formerly wheelchair-bound 'test pilots' in attendance did indeed use eLEGS to walk across the stage, in a slow-but-steady gait similar to that of full-time crutch-users."

Unfortunately it's likely not. Evolution or God (your choice) rarely gives something for nothing. This gene is likely there for a reason. Disabling it will have some drawback, and it may not be an obvious connection.

I agree. As a neuroscientist, it irritates me to no end when the media go from "$geneticmanipulation makes mice learn this task faster" to "$geneticmanipulation makes mice smarter". Smart is not a well defined concept. Learning faster on one specific test does not guarantee an increase in overall fitness.

I love apple products. I have 2 mac laptops, a mac mini, iPhone 3G, and 3 generations of iPods.
But I will not buy an iPad exactly and only for the reasons mentioned in TFA.
If the iPad offered a full internet experience, i would probably get it. But flash is still really really ubiquitous.

I am a behavioral neuroscientist and MySQL has been invaluable for my data storage and analysis.

MATLAB is my main analytical tool, so i generally keep my matlab code in a subversion repository and use MyM to communicate back and forth between MATLAB and MySQL.

I've been using MySQL since 1999. If I was getting into the game now, i might choose another relational DB.

One day i was walking along the street and i did a mental zoom out, looking down at myself like a spec of dust in new york city. Then zoomed out to see NYC as a spec of dust in the region, which was like a spec of dust on the planet which is like a spec of dust in the solar system which is like a spec of dust in the galaxy which is like a spec of dust in the universe.............

and then i literally fell down. Like my brain blew a fuse.

If humans had any conception of how small we are in the universe we might stop acting like toddlers fighting for toys. but what would be the fun in that.

The genocide of Armenia, Greeks and Kurds was far more organized than the American Indian Wars that lead to the conquest of the United States. 600,000 Armenians "died or were massacred during deportation" in the years 1915–1916.

I have no interest in getting into a debate about which crime was worse, but people have estimated that over 10 Million indigenous people died through war and disease because of the colonization of America.
