Journal Journal: Does water STILL flow on Mars?

Striking new images of the Red Planet have raised hopes life could be found on Mars after all. Scientists say they have photographic evidence that suggests liquid water may have been on the planet as little as five years ago. Experts last night said Mars now appears more active than previously thought and the latest study shows w

forrestt writes: "According to this article , a provocative new study of photographs taken from orbit suggests that liquid water flowed on the surface of Mars as recently as several years ago, raising the possibility that the red planet could harbor an environment favorable to life."

Submission + - Water on Mars

Virchull writes: "NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years. The analysis was done by comparing photos made 7 years apart and analyzing the newly found shapes. "The shapes of these deposits are what you would expect to see if the material were carried by flowing water," said Michael Malin of Malin Space Science Systems, San Diego. "They have finger-like branches at the downhill end and easily diverted around small obstacles." The atmosphere of Mars is so thin and the temperature so cold that liquid water cannot persist at the surface. It would rapidly evaporate or freeze. Researchers propose that water could remain liquid long enough, after breaking out from an underground source, to carry debris downslope before totally freezing. The two fresh deposits are each several hundred meters or yards long. Photos and more are at: http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/mars/news/mgs-20 061206.html Ok, water, ice, who brought the scotch?"

Times Online December 06, 2006

We've found water on Mars, scientists say Mark Henderson, Science Editor of The Times The gully that on Mars that scientists say was created by water (NASA/AP) Liquid water has flowed on the surface of Mars within the past five years, according to new evidence that suggests the Red Planet could currently be capable of harbouring life. Images taken from an orbiting spacecraft have revealed two fresh features in the Martian landscape that scientists think were been formed by brief torrents of water as recently as 2001. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-2490296, 00.html"

Submission + - Flowing Water Found on Mars

silentounce writes: "NASA announced today that they have found convincing evidence that liquid water has flowed on Mars within the last decade. Such evidence increases the probability of life existing on the red planet. However, not all scientists are convinced that the evidence proves the existence of liquid water. The New Scientist reports that 'many scientists believe the gullies were carved by liquid water, although others have argued they are due to avalanches of carbon dioxide gas or rivers of dust.'"

Submission + - Big Screens, Low Prices

PreacherTom writes: 'Tis the season to go high-definition, if prices for big-screen TVs are any guide. As the weather gets colder and the holidays grow near, competition among television manufacturers is heating up and prices are at their lowest point in years. For example, wide-screen, 50-inch plasmas can be found for less than $2,000, while 50-inch LCD's are as low as $1,350. On average, prices have declined 50% over the past two years. Businessweek offers a holiday buyers' guide, highlighting (with pictures) the season's top deals.

Submission + - Lifestyle Drugs Eradicate the Need for Sleep

MattSparkes writes: "New Scientist are running an article on lifestyle drugs that claim to help you function on little or no sleep. I'm dubious, but the interviewee in the article claims they work well. "Yves (not his real name), a 31- year-old software developer from Seattle, often doesn't have time for a full night's sleep. So he swallows something to make sure he doesn't need one." I quite enjoy my 8 hours anyway, so I don't think I'll bother."
