Submission + - Windows 7 - What we know so far... (apcmag.com)

Anonymous Anti-Coward writes: "We're still in the long dark before 7's dawn, but the earliest signs are encouraging: a new streamlined kernel, an inbuilt VM for running old software, a revised and simplified UI... there's every chance that Microsoft intends Windows 7 to rise from the ashes of Vista and be what Mac OS X was for Apple.'

Vista was released on January 30 2007 at which time it became available to one and all.
Unfortunately for Microsoft, the number of people who bought Vista was much closer to 'one' than 'all'."

Submission + - 9/11 Conspiracy Theories Debunked (maniacworld.com)

derrida writes: "To support the controlled-demolition theory, conspiracy theorists attack the official NIST report by insisting that fire doesn't melt steel. What NIST actually does claim is that the fires were sufficient enough to weaken the steel to the point where they would fail — structurally. This video attempts to debunk the 9/11 conspiracy theorists one at a time."

Submission + - Danny Smith stepping down as MinGW maintainer (sourceforge.net)

derrida writes: "From the cygwin mailing list: "Danny Smith sent email to the MinGW lists yesterday indicating that he was stepping down as a maintainer. Danny was the key person responsible for most of the improvements made to gcc and binutils for windows in the last couple of years. His contributions will be sorely missed. This is a real blow for Windows versions of gcc and binutils on both MinGW and Cygwin.""

Submission + - Intel V8 versus AMD 4X4 Platform (motherboards.org)

derrida writes: "In the world of CPU processors, whose is the best is always in question as the balance has swung in both directions in this war of the silicon wafer. Intel has been the leader many times and on many levels and markets, and although Texas upstarts AMD have given them a fair share of competition, Intel seems to always come out on top. AMD's FX series of CPUs propelled them into the limelight in the desktop environment, but their Opteron CPUs failed to make the impact AMD had hoped in the server domain as did the Turion CPUs in the mobile market. AMD makes a good product when they are at the top of their game, but Intel still maintains the overall leader position in all these platforms and that equates to better sales numbers. Only those gamers who just love AMD are really into the whole AM2 platform at the moment, and that is due to the mass popularity of Intel's Core 2 CPU line which is dominating the desktop environment."

Submission + - The Really Fair Scheduler (kerneltrap.org)

derrida writes: "During the many threads discussing Ingo Molnar's recently merged Completely Fair Scheduler, Roman Zippel has repeatedly questioned the complexity of the new process scheduler. In a recent posting to the Linux Kernel mailing list he offered a simpler scheduler named the 'Really Fair Scheduler' saying, "as I already tried to explain previously CFS has a considerable algorithmic and computational complexity. This patch should now make it clearer, why I could so easily skip over Ingo's long explanation of all the tricks CFS uses to keep the computational overhead low — I simply don't need them.""
Google

Submission + - Google Pack Adds StarOffice (blogspot.com)

derrida writes: "Quoting from the article: "Google Pack, the collection of applications recommended by Google, includes a new software: StarOffice, an office suite developed by Sun.[...]It will be interesting to see why Google didn't choose to include OpenOffice.org, the primary difference between StarOffice and OpenOffice.org being that StarOffice includes some proprietary components like clip-art graphics, fonts, templates and tools for Microsoft Office migration.""

Submission + - Adblock plus users "accused" of stealing (mozilla.org) 1

derrida writes: "There is this Firefox Add-on called Adblock plus that promises (and delivers) removal of "all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page". And there is also an ongoing debate whether this is stealing or not. Quoting two different views:
"Do you have a devise that automatically blocks all commercials on television.[?] There's a difference between ignoring commercials and blocking them." and
"My a** it is [stealing]! If your going to argue I'm taking something from you by not waiting for your ads to load, I'm going to argue you are "stealing" bandwidth.".
Going one step further some web developers released scripts that blocks Adblock (watch the oxynoron!).
How is really slashdot going to react if Adblock plus is heavily used by its readers?"

Submission + - Major Macedonian mastedon find (bbc.co.uk)

Dynamoo writes: "The BBC is reporting a spectacular mastedon find in Greneva, in the Macedonia region of Greece. The mastedon's tusks are a staggering 5 meters long, but what's more surprising is that humans actually used to catch these giant creatures and eat them.

The mastedon hasn't been named yet, although there is always the obvious "Philip the Mastedon" that springs to mind."

Internet Explorer

Submission + - Open Addict blocks Internet Explorer users (openaddict.com) 2

derrida writes: "The popular website Open Addict, is now blocking Internet Explorer users from viewing the newly designed front page due to IE rendering bugs: "I'm tired of hacking workarounds for IE's bad implementations of standard technologies; Try to validate Internet Explorer's home page and see if you think Microsoft cares about standards". And the site admin goes one step further: "I'm going to take this a step further. Since IE sucks so much and actually hurts the adoption and use of web standards, I'm asking each of you that run a website to block IE.". Here is how you can do it."
