Comment LED listing is good (Score 1) 1

The LED replacements lights could be good. I have a dimmable LED light array that I use for videos on NewsBlaze and it is amazingly good, battery consumption is low. I hope they last longer than the useless CFLs I have in my house, that cost 5 times more than the incandescents but often expire more quickly.

Submission + - The Chinese Big Brother (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: In China, conversations are recorded and a Chinese voice often suggests cautions which I am not actually able to understand. E-mails are filtered by an army of government engineers. They identify the people who contact me and, as a gesture of respect, they communicate it to me. The internet is subject to an obsessive form of supervision. They often degenerate into comedy, triggered by misunderstandings of consonant language characters. We don't realise how lucky we are.

Submission + - Google Gives up on Chinese Politics (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: The mindset of the Chinese government is narrow and old fashioned, It doesn't understand the basic issues of human rights or freedom essential in any civilized modern society and this could be one of the major reasons for which China may not be able to realize its full potential and growth in future years despite its manpower, resources and emerging economic strength and geographical advantages.

Submission + - Google gives to charity, no funky gifts this year (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: Each year, google gives fun, funky gifts to its advertisers, but not this year. Realising that it is really a wasted opportunity, google decided to make a real difference for 25 charities. The charities' gain is a loss for gift, card and shipping companies, but the change seems more worthwhile — even if I do still like my funky lighted radio.

Comment Re:database research ideas (Score 1) 6

In whatever terms you want them to do, but to do a search, first they must understand what possible results they will get. Very few people can get the exact results they wanted on a single search, so I'm suggesting they learn about refining searches. Once they have a result, they can look at it and decide if it is reasonable, it it looks like what they were expecting and if not, why not - and then what do they do about it.

Submission + - Facebook is Now a Telephone (newsblaze.com) 1

newsblaze writes: The Telephone Facebook app allows speaking live or sending voice messages from a Facebook. babyTEL says Social VoIP is "warmer social networking," and the weird Java eggphone works on Windows, Apple or Linux. It also connects to multiple IMs, but not Skype. Is the egg too funky to be serious?

Submission + - What to show 7/8 graders in database research? 6

PeterBVolk writes: Every year a magent school in my german home town sends 7 and 8 graders to our university for a week. I am currently employed as a member as academic staff and this year it is my turn to think of something. They have 3 days to "research" something. On the 5th day they have to hold a presentation and explain a poster they prepared on the 4th day. I've talked with other faculties and they typically do something praktical like "measure the tensile strength" of something. What should I let them do as a database research guy? Everything we do needs to much theoretical background. In the past the CS department didn't realy have any offerings at all for that week. So what do you think could be interesting in the field of databases for 7/8 graders that they can manage in 3 days and hold a presentation on?

Submission + - Social Security Validation Combats Fraud, ID Theft (newsblaze.com)

newsblaze writes: The real-time "IDentifier Validation" program is the Social Security Administration's "Consent Based Social Security Number Verification" service. It links Social Security Master Files and Death Indexes to validate SSN, Name, Date of Birth, Gender and Death Indicator (conditionally). A good step towards preventing ID theft and fraud prevention, but will there be privacy concerns and could it be used to steal IDs?
