A Look At How Far PC Gaming Has Come 427

Bit-tech is running a feature examining the progress PC games have made over the past couple decades. The article highlights aspects of modern games we often take for granted or nitpick, and compares them to earlier games in which such features were implemented poorly or not at all. Quoting: "Doom's legacy is still being felt today in fact and it's a fair bet that you can take any shooter off a shelf, from America’s Army to Zeno Clash, examine it, and list a dozen things that those games owe to Doom. Things like the wobble of the guns and the on-screen feedback that tells you which direction you are being shot from — these were things that id Software invented. On the other hand, from a story perspective, Doom was absolutely rubbish. You start in a room, no idea what’s going on and you are surrounded by demons. You have to read the manual and supporting media to get a grip on it all — something modern games would get heavily slated for doing. Yet the idea that plot was optional caught on and the same flaw was replicated in other games of the era, such as Quake and (to a lesser extent) Duke Nukem 3D. There were years and years where the lessons of early story-driven games were forgotten and all anyone really cared about was having as many sprites or polygons as possible."

Word. This is kind of a silly topic but it actually shines a bright light on ...what it means to be human!!
Without motivation we are nothing. Motivation is the main... uh, motivator behind everything we humans do.
If an ancestor did not feel motivated to procreate, that behavior died with that individual.
Everyone alive today contains deep-rooted psychological motivators that were selected for over thousands of years of human evolution.

Amazing to wonder if really good sex-bots (from Japan) could spell the end of humanity. So many people these days chose not to have kids... If we can't keep humanity going, why on earth would AI beings even start?

Maingear Touts New Rig As "Planet's Greenest Gaming PC" 136

Maingear has just unveiled what they are calling the "planet's greenest gaming PC." Built using a small form factor and coming with Intel's new Ion graphics as the default option, this little powerhouse is built with a definite eye toward energy consumption. "Said configuration is available with Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs and an 80+ certified 300-watt power supply; those who care more about frame rates than Ma Earth can opt for a GeForce 9800 GT ECO, which — despite being a discrete, power-hungry GPU — still swallows some 40 percent less power than a standard 9800 GT. You'll also find WiFi support, room for an optional Blu-ray drive and TV tuner, upwards of 8GB of RAM and room for a single 2.5-inch HDD or SSD. The whole box checks in at just 7.6- x 8.3- x 11.4-inches, and it's available for order right now starting at $799."

Motion Control To Lengthen Console Hardware Cycles 160

With the recent E3 demonstrations of new motion-based control for consoles — Microsoft's Natal, Sony's Motion Controller, and Ubisoft's camera-based system for the Wii — analysts now expect the current console generation to last longer than normal. Microsoft exec Shane Kim said he expects the Xbox 360 to last until around 2015, in part due to Natal and new services available through Xbox Live. Signal Hill's Todd Greenwald thinks this cycle may not need to end at all: "Microsoft and Sony have invested so much in their current hardware line, as have third party publishers, that we don't think any party is seriously interested in throwing away these investments and starting over from scratch. For all of these reasons, we think this cycle will last longer than those in the past, and don't see new hardware coming until 2011 at the earliest, and 2012 to 2013 more likely (if at all — if new services like OnLive take off, or if Xbox Live and PlayStation Network become more and more robust, there may not be a need for another console cycle).'"

I agree that the no-penknives-on-airplanes rule is crazy and I can definitely see where someone that has been around a little longer will notice a lessening of personal liberty. But, there are huge environmental upsides to it:
I'd like zoning laws that would curb people's ability to create 2 acre yards, thereby requiring everyone in the neighborhood to drive a car.
I'd like a hefty tax on gasoline to encourage people to use more efficient transportation.
I like reasonable speeding laws because someone else's high speed scares me and lower speeds are much more efficient.

We really could have used some additional government control of the US financial markets.
Basically, I could understand why a libertarian would not like CCTV but, libertarians are idealistic fools.

The OP gives a very unclear description of the events.
When the cops showed up he was busy putting away all the stuff he had just walked out with.
I take "just walked out with" to mean "just walked out of the store". After re-reading the account for the 3rd time, I figured he was "putting away all the stuff" into his car parked just outside the store.
