Arguably, the increasing incidence of pedestrians and cyclists being injured or killed by distracted drivers requires a legislative effort to minimise the harm, as people cannot be trusted to act responsibly. Some people would argue the same for online pornography, given the failure of many parents to educate and monitor their children's Internet usage.
I believe the immediate danger to all road users associated with distracted driving far outweighs the largely moral issue of online pornography.
My take is that a large part of the traditional Slashdot reader base love technology and the science behind it, but dislike the impact it has on person to person relationships, social norms and society in general. So get off my lawn unless you're gonna mow it.

I see no advantage to this.. thing over traditional blood, sweat and tears learning methods. The thing doesn't even tune. The most fundamental part of learning any instrument is feeling the natural acoustic harmonics generated when the instrument is slightly out of tune, compared to when it is in tune. This is ear training, and no shortcuts can be taken there. This device can not replicate that. Even an unplugged electric guitar generates audible harmonics that are fundamental to learning music.
The other issue I have is the requirement to concentrate wholly on the fretboard, not the score. This method may teach the student a few scales, licks or songs, but they will not develop the subconscious fingering accuracy required to truly advance. This will only come by throwing away this.. thing, and buying a proper guitar.

Bummer you excluded the bathroom lights. I had mine on a midnight to dawn program controlled by a motion detector in the bedroom hall that slowly ramped the hall/bathroom lights up to 30% - great way to avoid squinting from the brightness when you go for that 3AM piss.
I did mine with Clipsal C-Bus, not cheap but works really well. It integrates with Clipsal Star-Serve for AV and runs wirelessly or with Cat-5 (they recommend using pink cat-5 for identification as standard).
As well as the C-Bus, I also ran cat-6 data, coax and AV to each room, all served by a cabinet in the garage. All in separate conduits, with extra pull wires.
One tip though; don't expect it to add to the resale value of your home if you have a complex system for lighting. Many buyers will see that as a potential future liability. Be sure to run standard light switching circuits as well.

I'm all for a better designed bicycle helmet, and I'd use it in some circumstances. But I'm vehemently against the government mandating that I must wear one.
