Submission + - Anti-Piracy Outfit Tries to Shut Down Demonoid

Ernesto writes: "The Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN filed a lawsuit against Demonoid's ISP Leaseweb in which they demand that the site will be taken offline.

This the the fist time that BREIN takes on one of the bigger BitTorrent sites. Last week they won a lawsuit against Leaseweb in a similar case. In this case the Amsterdam court decided that Leaseweb had to take down the BitTorrent site everlasting.nu and hand over the name and address of the owner. Additionally, Leaseweb was forced to take down everlasting.nu, in case the site returns in the near future."

Submission + - How Windows Vista can be crashed

Manu Stanley writes: "How To Crash Windows Vista In 10 Seconds Or Less
Posted by Alexander Wolfe

Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system is a mighty paradox. On the one hand, it's more robust and feature-rich than any of its predecessors. For the most part, it's also more secure and is immune to many pretty sophisticated takedown attempts. But it's got one nasty Achilles' Heel, which'll enable you to crash the OS in under 10 seconds.

Here's the deal: One of the simplest command sequences you can think of will take Vista down completely. Hold down the Windows key and the letter "E" for 10 seconds or so. After opening up Windows Explorer windows ad infinitum, your system will stop responding.

Equally useful (maybe more useful) is little-known process to repair bad boot sectors. Called Bootrec, it's an update of something that was previously available on XP."

Submission + - Protect Privacy Online Using Secret Identity (akacard.com)

techna writes: "A new credit card is in the works that offers users an alternative identity, including name, address, credit card number, CVV and exp date to protect their privacy online. Several racy uses have been suggested for the card but generally it's best for avoiding new account fraud- the bad kind where the carders take your name, SSN, bday and start a new life in FL. The card is launched but under the radar for now. There are a few blogs on it and a few articles on the website too. http://www.akacard.com/"

Submission + - Seagate Meets the Terabyte

WMIF writes: Seagate today finally marks its long-awaited entry into the one-terabyte drive arena.

Manufactured around a 4-platter design (as opposed to the 5 platters found in the already-shipping Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000), the new drive will be available as a consumer oriented unit, the Barracuda 7200.11, and an enterprise-targeted Barracuda ES.2.

With this new generation Seagate makes the leap to a 32-megabyte buffer, an increase bound to elevate the firm's performance to a new level.

Submission + - Antarctic Ice Increasing AND Decreasing (ecoenquirer.com)

An anonymous reader writes: Recent scientific publications have reported either inceasing or decreasing ice volumes on the Antarctic continent, and while this would seem to suggest considerable scientific uncertainty on the issue, new research summarized at http://www.ecoenquirer.com/antarctic-ice.htm suggests that both findings might be true at the same time.

Submission + - GTAIV trailer irks NYC mayor

UnanimousCoward writes: Several sources including this GameSpot article note that the new Grand Theft Auto IV trailer (which depicts "Liberty City" with familiar NYC landmarks) has drawn comments from NYC Mayor Bloomberg ("The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers") as well as the NYC police commissioner. Couldn't ask for better pub. The trailer can be seen here, and the game doesn't even come out until October!

Submission + - Oracle Linux adopters labelled 'idiots'

atbarboz writes: "One of the first converts to Oracle's support for Linux said it has endured a public backlash since its decision to drop Red Hat.
Melbourne company Opes Prime Stockbroking told ZDNet Australia that in the weeks following its announcement to adopt Oracle Linux, upset Linux enthusiasts phoned, e-mailed and wrote about the company online to complain at the decision. "People called us out of the blue to tell us we were idiots," said Opes executive director Anthony Blumberg.
Does it behove the linux community to act like fanatics and fanboys?"

Steve Jobs Announces (some) DRM-free iTunes 838

Fjan11 writes "Steve Jobs just announced that starting next month on you can buy higher quality 256Kbps AAC encoded DRM-free versions of iTunes songs for $1.29. Upgrades to songs you've already bought will be available at the $0.30 price difference. Currently EMI is the only publisher participating, accounting for about 20% of the songs available." There's also reports from Reuters and ABC News. The deal excludes the Beatles. You can also read the official press release from Apple if you still think this a late joke; this story confirms earlier speculation.

Submission + - How free Web hosters profit from phishing

netbuzz writes: "Free Web hosters profit handsomely from phishing sites, even those they shut down, says one such hoster who contends that he has all but weaned himself off the juice. Scott Smith of Ripway.com says he gave up $10,000 a month in ad revenue — "significant for a family-owned business" — when Ripway really started cracking down on phishers and spammers last year. Aside from the obvious — that no good deed goes unpunished — Smith's account raises this question: Is his diligence an exception or the rule?

Submission + - MidnightBSD adds proplice to base system

Archite writes: "After a long weekend and much testing, I have integrated propolice into our system.. This will translate into both a more secure and stable userland, kernel, and mports system. While this is very well tested on OpenBSD and a few other systems, it is still very much beta for us. We will be requiring a lot of testing of both the base system as well as that of mports. While many mports will not be affected, I am certain that many of them have horrid code that will turn up when we least expect it. This is only the first step in what will become numerous security changes to our base system. While we are creating a Desktop system that will be easy to use, another aspect is that we must keep it secure with little needed interaction from a user unless they want to. Please send any issues or concerns that you find with this change to security@ and we will be happy to explain and or try and resolve your issue. Please view http://www.justjournal.com/users/mbsd for other updates to MidnightBSD."

Submission + - Literary agent sues Wikimedia Foundation & SFW

julesh writes: "Literary agent Barbara Bauer, listed as one of the 20 worst literary agents by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America and well known for making legal threats has initiated a law suit against a long list of individuals who have reported on her inclusion in the list, including the SFWA, the Wikimedia Foundation, and a number of prominent publishing industry personalities who maintain web sites that discussed her actions. One defendant is named only as "Miss Snark, Literary Agent", a well-known psuedonym of an anonymous blogger. See her Wikipedia article for more details. This action prompted the deletion and then restoration of her Wikipedia article, which is now being considered for deletion again. This raises the question: can you effectively silence criticism of you via litigation, even when the criticism is based on widely published (and almost-certainly true) information?"
