Submission + - IPCC scientists answer your questions.

TapeCutter writes: M. Mann and co. over at RealClimate have started a disscussion analysing the contents of the recently released IPCC SPM. They intend to write a series of articles going over the report chapter by chapter and answer readers comments. So for the dwindling army of "skeptics" and those who want to know more, fire away, but please respect the "dinner coversation" atmosphere.

Submission + - Profitability of User Experience Research

mikeisme77 writes: "User experience research leads to increased profitability of products, yet many smaller companies still view user experience research as detrimental to the bottom line rather than leading to increased profits. Iowa State's HCI Program has a blog that discusses this and other issues dealing with the user experience. From the entry on user experience research budgets:

Rather than viewing user experience research as a cost that negatively effects the bottom line, corporations should view it as a way to boost revenue. When a user has a good, let alone a great, user experience s/he is much more likely to come back to a web site or application again. Not only that, but users also tell other users about their user experience leading to increased sales — one needs only to look at the Apple iPod or Nintendo DS to see the power of word of mouth advertising based on good user experience. However, most corporations probably won't discover this on their own and HCI professionals need to evangelize for the user experience and bring the facts about the fiscal benefits of user experience research."

Submission + - Making a case to ditch IE?

Mattcelt writes: "I've had it with Internet Explorer-only sites. (And to be fair, I've even had it with "IE- and Netscape-only" sites too.) In my company (an international firm with 5000+ users), the rollout of IE7 is being delayed because so many of our "IE-only" internal sites won't even work with the new version. It seems to me that if that much re-coding has to be done anyway, why not change the corporate standard to embrace Firefox, Opera, Safari, and, oh, maybe the W3C guidelines? I am in a position to make the suggestion on a wide-enough scale to have a reasonable chance of success, if I can make a strong enough case. So my question to the Slashdot crowd is this: How do I, with facts and figures, make the strongest case to move away from IE as the default and get our developers to adopt a more open strategy?"
It's funny. Laugh.

Submission + - Identifying logos in imagery on the web

Jugalator writes: A group running a project called Logo.Hallucination are picking out images on the web for scanning with a neural network in order to identify well-known logo types. Although many Slashdot readers may already feel they know the answer in their hearts, how is the giant 600 BC sewage system Cloaca Maxima related to Microsoft Windows? Note that some posts are unsafe for work, and I'll never look the same at the Citroën logo.

Submission + - Wii Sports Experiment

rgriscom writes: "A man known as "heysuburbia" has conducted an experiment monitoring the physical changes resulting from 6 weeks of Wii Sports training. He consistently played 30 minutes of Wii sports every day and recorded the changes in his weight, BMI, calories burned, body fat %, and heart rate. The results are surprising. This opens a new door for Nintendo to market the Wii towards gamers who want to get fit, and anyone else who just wants some exercise without leaving the house."

Journal Journal: French WoW player reaches level 70 in 28 hours

A die-hard World of Warcraft player has reached level 70 within 28 hours of The Burning Crusade's release. Gullerbone, a 24-year-old French WoW player, reached level 70 at 4:04 am (CET) on January 17, 2007. He is believed to be the world's first. The fact that a player has managed to reach level 70 so fast will not please developers Blizzard, who had hoped to see th

Submission + - Warrantless wiretaps replaced with secret courts

Nate writes: President Bush has decided to do away with warrantless wiretaps, and instead require the approval of a secret court before monitoring can take place. While it is not clear why the judges making up the court must be secret, the move has been hailed by many opponents of the wiretaps as a step in the right direction. The Bush administration has expressed satisfaction with the new scheme as well, with press secretary Tony Snow stating "The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has put together its guidelines and its rules and those have met administration concerns about speed and agility when it comes to responding to bits of intelligence where we may to be able to save American lives". Will this move ease concerns about the motives behind Bush's wiretaps, or simply ease the pressure on the Bush administration?

Submission + - Matt Stone replies to Richard Dawkins

Chris Gray writes: "After Richard Dawkin's lukewarm response to his appearance on the South Park episode, Go God Go, creator Matt Stone has fired off a reply, imaginatively entitled "Richard Fucking Dawkins", accusing (among other things) Dawkins having a cult of followers. From the article:

"Wich are you more mad about, the fact that we made you sound stupid, or the fact that you're a complete fucking idiot dude! Look, Trey and I may not be Christians, but we also don't push our ways on people, and from the looks of things, you have a fucking cult going, not a belief, or a scientific fact, A fucking CULT."

Stone has also been accused of deleting comments to his blog post that don't support his view, justifying it as, "No, It's just that people with no display images, deserve no spot on my blog comment, nerd."

A cache of the blog post is available in case of its removal."
