Comment Re:Want a higher turnout? (Score 1) 93

The problem isn't necessarily lack of meaningful choice (although that is tragic in and of itself), the problem is that of apathy. Diddy's entreaties notwithstanding, a lot of people don't believe that every vote counts, and that may be a good reason why people don't show up to the polls on election day. Or they just don't care. Or they are deliberately not voting as a matter of protest (whatever that may be).

Bankruptcy attorney here. Without reaching the merits of discharging criminal restitution, you do not necessarily run the risk of losing everything you have in a Chapter 7 (and you definitely don't in a Chapter 13). From my experience, the only time an asset is in jeopardy is if there is equity and your attorney didn't take the requisite exemptions. This rarely happens, however -- most people get to keep their houses (usually underwater), their cars, and most other things. YMMV however.

As a Cooley alumnus who just took the bar, I will step out of the cloud of anonymity and give a hearty "this" to the above comment.

Now, it's no secret that Cooley's reputation amongst the legal profession at large may not be the rosiest. I myself am cognizant of this fact as I prepare to get a job out there. However, I'm not certain that the litigious nature of this administration (or at least in this particular case) should reflect badly on the institution as a whole.

Simply having a low ranking by US News and World Report doesn't give any real indication of how the alumni are as actual practicing attorneys. Just going to Harvard doesn't mean you're going to be a star in the courtroom. Cooley's curriculum places a heavy emphasis on the practical, rather than the theoretical nature, of the law. All professors have practiced in the past, and often tell war stories relevant to the subject being taught.

tl;dr Don't knock the students because the administration is acting irresponsibly.
