Submission + - How to best emulate Cable TV on a PC for dad? 1

sunwolf writes: "My first Ask /. comes from a dire need to cut costs. Comcast has now shifted to charging in liters of blood for its Triple Play (cable tv/internet/phone) axis of necessary evils, and I would like to move to an internet-only model. The only thing keeping me from doing so is that my dad has rarely ever touched a computer, and I would prefer the transition to be as simple as possible for him. To that end I've planned a computer that uses: the tv screen via HDMI, the Wiimote as a pointing device, and a cheap wacom tablet for input, so he doesn't need to learn to use the mouse and keyboard. Even with these improvements, though, the ease of channel surfing is, afaik, unmatched on PCs.

What is the best way to emulate this experience on a PC?"

They really are missing out on a huge demographic by banning the Kama Sutra. Imagine the utility of a touchscreen, vibrating smartphone that can display the kama sutra while it's at it.

As for your privacy, the only entities that can see the actual content of your files are 1) you, 2) the ads analysis program, 2) Google developers/system maintenance staff who sign a blood oath that they will not violate user trust, and 3) government agencies that provide a lawful warrant or subpoena for the data.

They are one and the same!

I haven't tried it myself, but I've been meaning to test out Go-oo, which is purportedly faster. From the site:
"A Faster application

From first-time startup, where we sort I/O to reduce seek cost, to a highly optimised second start application and a systray quick-starter on Linux we are faster. We use less memory than up-stream, we link faster, use better system allocators, and don't waste so much time & memory in the registry. Go-oo performance is hard to beat. "
