Submission + - P2P Downloads Increase CD Sales

JonathanR writes: A study conducted by Industry Canada and the University of London confirms what we all suspect; that P2P music downloads contribute to an increase in CD sales. Of course the Music Industry Piracy Investigations (MIPI) general manager, Sabiene Heindl, had to insist to the media that the results did not translate to Australia. She goes on to quote figures suggesting 57% of people who download music using P2P don't go on to purchase legitimate media.

"It's not rocket science", she says. I agree that it isn't, however I'm not quite sure what the other 43% of P2P music-downloaders do. Perhaps the not-so-rocket-science corollary would suggest that they go on to contribute the music industry coffers. Is it these sort who found there way into the Canadian study results? It's amusing how the music industry can make such absolute statements, whereas other mortals have to conduct studies in order to discover the facts.

Feed Engadget: RFID skin patches take aim at medical errors (engadget.com)

They're far from the first to put RFID tags to use for medical tasks, but Frank Sammeroff Ltd and Gentag Inc. look to have a slightly less invasive solution than some of the implantable or edible options we've seen in the past, with them instead making use of a tried and true skin patch to keep tabs on patients. That, they hope, will help to reduce medical errors by letting doctors use their cellphone or handheld to update medical records and receive warnings of potential drug interactions, among other information. Of course, the patches aren't necessarily limited to medical applications, with Sammeroff also touting them as a possible solution for large organizations or amusements parks, and even as a means for parents to keep watch on their kids. No word on any takers just yet, but the patches are said to be "competitively priced," so if you're looking to bring a little paranoia into your organization, you might want to look into them.

Feed The Register: China goes lunar (theregister.com)

Satellite arrives, all looking good

Brief China's lunar probe has arrived in orbit around the moon after a twelve day journey. It slotted into place yesterday, after receiving orders to slow down some 200km from its destination. It will spend the next year scanning the surface and reporting back, with images and data, to mission control.

Feed Engadget: Scientists develop sticky tape inspired by insect feet (engadget.com)

Black gaffer tape might be about to get a run for its money as our fix-it of choice -- researchers at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, in collaboration with a team at Carnegie Mellon, are working on a new type of tape that gets its stick from a pattern of microscopic ridges modeled after insect feet. The two teams studied over 300 insects to develop the tape, which can be reused hundreds of times before losing its stickiness then simply washed in soapy water to regain its initial grip. Tests of the tape have enabled a 4-ounce robot to climb walls, and the team says that although it'll never be as cheap or as strong as regular old Scotch, the product they've nicknamed "insect tape" will be reasonably cheap to use around the house. Yeah, but can you build a server out of it?
