Comment I see what they did (Score 1) 667

I was on unemployment recently, but before I got work and stopped I got a bunch of reminders that they were switching from checks to a debit card through Bank of America. Since people on unemployment don't have a choice, that's a prime position to throw a mandatory hike here and there for those cards. And since unemployment is so high... If the bailout wasn't clear enough of how the McBanks work, I'm glad that something finally pushed people away from them. Or at least starting to.

RIAA Says "Don't Expect DRMed Music To Work Forever" 749

Oracle Goddess writes "Buying DRMed content, then having that content stop working later, is fair, writes Steven Metalitz, the lawyer who represents the MPAA, RIAA in a letter to the top legal advisor at the Copyright Office. 'We reject the view that copyright owners and their licensees are required to provide consumers with perpetual access to creative works.' In other words, if it stops working, too bad. Not surprisingly, Metalitz also strongly opposes any exemption that would allow users to legally strip DRM from content if a store goes dark and takes down its authentication servers."

Extreme Christmas Lights In Orlando 318

tripmine writes "The Orlando Sentinel has a story about a geek who can't get enough Christmas light. 'This Christmas, tech-savvy people such as Hansen are increasingly building the biggest, most elaborate holiday lights in neighborhoods across Central Florida and throughout the country. They typically work in fields such as computer programming, Web development, engineering or audio and visual services and are armed with a technical knowledge that the average person lacks. They trade tips and stories on message boards and set up Web sites with step-by-step descriptions of how they installed their lights as well as pictures and videos of the finished product.'" Many cities have neighborhoods where the spectacle takes up blocks at a time, not just individual houses, too, as anyone who's strolled down Austin's 37th Street can attest. Links invited (in comments) to the best / worst light-spectacles you know of.

This includes all Google services such as: Gmail, Talk, and Reader among many other services. It is currently unknown what Google is going to do to resolve this issue. Meanwhile, thousands of users are without email over the Christmas Holiday. Merry Christmas.
