Submission + - Larry Lessig: Can American Culture Survive Google? (tnr.com)

An anonymous reader writes: The main article on The New Republic website today is a sharp piece by Harvard law professor and new media guru Lawrence Lessig on the powerful implications, good and bad, of the Google Books settlement. Lessig writes about how the settlement will profoundly reshape American copyright law in unintended ways, creating a system that further restricts books and ideas. And he tries to answer the very difficult question: How will American culture change in this new era?

Submission + - Huffington Post Republished Every Tweet Ever Made (gawker.com)

mantis2009 writes: Gawker is reporting that the Huffington Post, a popular news and opinion blog based in the United States, temporarily republished the Twitter feed of every Twitter user on a webpage that included advertisements. In addition to republishing all public Twitter feeds, the Huffington Post also posted messages sent by all Twitter feeds that were set to remain "locked" and private. All Twitter feeds were mirrored at a HuffingtonPost.com URL (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/twitter/[username]). "If you're a Twitter user, congratulations: You're also a Huffington Post contributor!"

I agree with you 100%. There are several sites for which I use 'throw away' passwords. But what you (and other commenters) are forgetting is that for some people that password might be valuable. For example, your password for the auto repair forum might be junk, but it would be a bad thing for the forum moderator to have an easily-guessable password.

Does It Suck To Be An Engineering Student? 971

Pickens writes "Aaron Rower has an interesting post on Wired with the "Top 5 Reasons it Sucks to be an Engineering Student" that includes awful textbooks, professors who are rarely encouraging, the dearth of quality counseling, and every assignment feels the same. Our favorite is that other disciplines have inflated grades. "Brilliant engineering students may earn surprisingly low grades while slackers in other departments score straight As for writing book reports and throwing together papers about their favorite zombie films," writes Rower. "Many of the brightest students may struggle while mediocre scholars can earn top scores." For many students, earning a degree in engineering is less than enjoyable and far from what they expected. If you want to complain about your education, this is your chance."

KDE Goes Cross-Platform, Supports Windows and OS X 513

klblastone writes "The KDE desktop environment is going cross-platform with support for the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. In addition to porting the core KDE libraries and applications, developers are also porting popular KDE-based software like the Amarok audio player and the KOffice productivity suite. New KDE binaries for Windows were released yesterday and are now available from KDE mirrors through an automated installer program. The Mac OS X port is made available via BitTorrent in universal binary format."

Will the Web Replace TV? 306

dratcw writes "With the continuing writers' strike cutting way back on the number of new and original TV shows available, many media Web sites are providing alternatives to TV that can be found on the Web. A number of sites are offering features describing broadcast/cable TV alternatives while you wait for that next episode of 'Chuck'. 'What better time than during the writers' strike to (re)discover Internet TV and video? The quantity, quality, and diversity of online video grows by the day; and though it's far from perfect, it is at least interesting enough to make you forget that you're watching it on a PC monitor.'" Submission + - Taxman goes browsing on eBay (theglobeandmail.com)

Kaneda2112 writes: "Interesting story in the "Globe And Mail" where the Canada Revenue Agency is now trolling eBay Canada for high volume sellers — looking to make sure high volume sellers are reporting their income. The taxman cometh — they certainly don't want anyone making any untaxable income.

"The company also argued that the CRA had not shown enough evidence to prove that it "was conducting a genuine and serious inquiry." Mr. Justice Roger Hughes of the Federal Court of Canada ruled that eBay is legally obliged to turn over the information even if it is located elsewhere."

I was unaware that a Federal Court could demand company records from another country. Can they be compelled to do so?

Submission + - Less Than 2 Percent of UK Companies Have Upgraded 1

Rob writes: Computer Business Review is reporting that less than 2% of UK-based firms have already upgraded all their desktops to Windows Vista. Just shy of 5% said that they have begun a Windows Vista desktop upgrade program. 6.5% said they will upgrade in the next 6 months; 12.6% in the next 12 months; 13% in the next 18 months; and 18% in the next two years. That means that within two years from now, only 56% of survey respondents say they will have upgraded their firm's desktops to Windows Vista.

Submission + - Is Apple doing all it can to beat Vista?

aalobode writes: The NYTimes is running an article on the narrowing window that Apple has for beating Microsoft's Vista. According the NYT, not enough has been done to capitalize on the Mac user experience versus the "world of hurt that is Vista" and it also points out that that restructuring of Apple leaves ambiguities about Apple's exact commitment to the computer end of its business. The article calls MS Vista's certified vendors, developers and driver writers a flywheel that takes a while to come up to speed and then becomes unstoppable.
