Apparently this is blown out of proportion: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010/07/15/reality-check-modding-the-droid-x-may-not-lead-to-a-bricked-phone/ "This breaking news may not be as dire as many are claiming, as a google search of OMAP3 and e-fuse reveals that current OMPA handset already have e-fuse in place as part of the M-Shield hardware security technology built into TI’s OMAP system on a chip. It is on the very hackable DROID and the not-so-hacking-friendly Milestone, but it is not being used by Motorola to lock the bootloader of the handset. " etc...

Submission + - Fring calls Skype "Cowards" - Skype Responds (wifitalk.ca)

An anonymous reader writes: It seems that Skype and Fring are not getting along so well today. First, Fring made a claim that Skype was blocking Fring and in a subsequent blog post, called Skype cowards. "Now that fring expanded capacity to support the huge demand for video calling for all users, Skype has blocked us from doing so. They are afraid of open mobile communication. Cowards." Skype has responded, stating that Fring’s mis-use of Skype software was damaging their brand and reputation. "there is no truth to Fring’s claims that Skype has blocked it. Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own."

Submission + - Consumer Reports can't recommend iPhone 4 (consumerreports.org)

jbezorg writes:

It's official. Consumer Reports' engineers have just completed testing the iPhone 4, and have confirmed that there is a problem with its reception. When your finger or hand touches a spot on the phone's lower left side—an easy thing, especially for lefties—the signal can significantly degrade enough to cause you to lose your connection altogether if you're in an area with a weak signal. Due to this problem, we can't recommend the iPhone 4.

Submission + - Debunked:Electric Cars Won't Strain the Power Grid (greencarreports.com)

thecarchik writes: Last week's heat wave prompted another eruption of that perennial question: Won't electric cars that recharge from grid power overload the nation's electricity system? A comprehensive and wide-ranging two-volume study from 2007, Environmental Assessment of Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles, looked at the impact of plug-in vehicles on the U.S. electrical grid. It also analyzed the "wells-to-wheels" carbon emissions of plug-ins versus gasoline cars. The load of one plug-in recharging (about 2 kilowatts) is roughly the same as that of four or five plasma television sets. Plasma TVs hardly brought worries about grid crashes.

Submission + - iPad 3G SIMs Allow $15 Data-Only iPhones (wifitalk.ca)

An anonymous reader writes: Ever wanted a data-only iPhone plan? Well now you can. Just take the activated microSIM from an iPad 3G, pop it into a microSIM/SIM adapter, put it into your iPhone, and change the iPhone's APN settings to data-only. Don't have a microSIM? No problem. You can get one for $5-$15 depending on your carrier.

The only difficult part is you need momentary access to an iPad 3G to activate the micro SIM before you put it into your iPhone, but you can always borrow someone else's.

Add in a few VOIP apps (google voice/skype) and you can get a voice plan for $6 a month. Add the $15 250 MB data plan and you can talk unlimited with texting and browsing for a little over $20.

Submission + - Google Voice Opens To All (wifitalk.ca)

An anonymous reader writes: Google Voice is now open to anyone in the US, removing the need to search for an invite.

Heading over to the Google Voice site allows people with a US IP address and a US phone number to sign up for an account. Non-US IPs are blocked, and non-US based phone numbers are prevented from being attached to Google Voice (with the one odd exception of the 403 area code of southern Alberta, but there are some ways around the geoblocking part of it anyways.

Submission + - Skype App Updated: 3G Calling on the iPhone Enable (wifitalk.ca)

silverpig writes: Skype has just announced that an updated version of its iPhone app has been released to the app store and now allows calling over 3G.

While this functionality has been available on the iPhone since a January update to the SDK, and while other apps such as Fring have enabled 3G VOIP calling through their apps, Skype has been noticeably absent from the VOIP over 3G landscape. Until today.

Included in the app update are some UI tweaks and a call quality indicator to help you predict what your VOIP over 3G call quality will be like.

Most interesting in the announcement is the suggestion that while skype-to-skype over 3G will be free for 2010, skype is investigating pricing options and may charge for it in 2011. This could lead to smartphones being sold with data only + skype plans.

Submission + - Mobilicity Launches in Canada (wifitalk.ca)

silverpig writes: It's not every day that a new cellular company opens its doors. The latest new entrant into the Canadian consumer wireless industry announced its launch plans today and will open its doors tomorrow. Following in the footsteps of Wind Mobile, Mobilicity (formerly DAVE wireless) is the second new entrant into the oligopoly of Canadian wireless companies. Limited initially to the Toronto area, they will expand to other major Canadian cities later this year. Key features include an "all you can eat" plan consisting of unlimited everything for $65 a month, and a pay-as-you-go account called "My Wallet" which will be used for pay-per-use services.

The "My Wallet" feature seems great as it looks like pay-per-use will ONLY come out of "My Wallet" and will never appear on your monthly bill. Thus, if you go out of your service area and start racking up huge roaming fees, you'll be cut off once the balance is gone and you won't be stuck with a nasty surprise come the end of the month.
