The problem with that is if you are a different ISP there is no guarantee that your traffic will stay local. To connect with a server that I know is in the same town takes 17 hops via traceroute and based on host names bounces from Iowa (local) to Chicago to Denver to Kansas City to Iowa

the_denman writes: "The latest decision from the Minnesota court of appeals is that to receive source code for the CMI Intoxilyzer it "...must be premised on a showing that an examination of the instrument's software would show defects in its operation or at least would be necessary to determine whether a defect exists."

So that means no fishing expeditions for the source code. But this is still going on to the Minnesota supreme court again. This is still assuming that CMI will even release the code."

the_denman writes: "Today the House of Representatives passed a bill delaying the digital tv transtion until June 12 due to 3.7 million homes that are still waiting for $40 coupons for converter boxes.
However, this bill does allow individual stations to decide if they transition now or wait until June. President Obama is expected to sign this bill in to law."

SpuriousLogic writes: Scientologist Nancy Cartwright, who does the voice of Bart Simpson on "The Simpsons," has recorded a message in the voice of the iconic animated character promoting the controversial quasi-religious organization.
Cartwright recorded the pitch (audio below) for a robocall to boost turn-out for a Scientology event at the organization's Hollywood center. Though she takes care to identify herself by her real name and not her character, she uses the Bart voice at a few points in the recording.
"This is not authorized by us," said "Simpsons" executive producer Al Jean. "'The Simpsons' does not, and never has, endorsed any religion, philosophy or system of beliefs any more profound than Butterfinger bars." (Okay, it's not Jean's wittiest line).

ashitaka writes "KDDI has announced that they will be launching a 1Gbps Internet service to single-family home and condo users in October. The service is supposedly synchronous, with 1Gbps in both directions, although the article implies that speeds will vary with location. Cost will be 5,985 yen/month (about US$56.50) for the basic Internet and IP phone service. This is intended to compete with NTT, who currently control over 70% of the Japanese FTTH market."

An anonymous reader writes "So, you thought you did well to support the fledgling music industry by purchasing your tracks legally from the Wal-Mart store? Well, forget about moving these tracks to a new PC! Since they started selling DRM-free tracks last year, there's no money to be made in maintaining the DRM support systems, and in fact, support is being shut down. Make sure you circumvent the restrictions by burning the tracks to an old-fashioned CD before Wal-mart 'will no longer be able to assist with digital rights management issues for protected WMA files purchased from Walmart.com.' Support ends October 9th."

'It's a fundamental flaw in the Adobe design. This was designed stupidly,' said Bruce Schneier ... The flaw rests in Adobe's Flash video servers that are connected to the company's players installed in nearly all of the world's Web-connected computers. The software doesn't encrypt online content, but only orders sent to a video player such as start and stop play. To boost download speeds, Adobe dropped a stringent security feature that protects the connection between the Adobe software and its players." webax also notes that the article suggests DRM as a potential solution to the problem.
