Submission + - Dogs trained to use computers (presscue.com)

Canine at the Keyboard writes: "Austrian researchers have successfully trained dogs to use computers, according to a study published online in Animal Cognition. Friederike Range and colleagues from the University of Vienna in Austria have shown for the first time that dogs can classify complex color photographs and place them into categories in the same way that humans do, and the dogs successfully demonstrate their learning through the use of computer automated touch-screens, eliminating potential human influence. Considering that million monkeys at keyboards made the Internet, I wonder what contribution the dogs would make."

Submission + - Encryption key management problems loom (computerworld.com)

Lucas123 writes: "While the fear of losing keys has kept a lot companies from encrypting data, increased regulatory and public pressure — mainly from media reports of lost backup tapes — is forcing more companies to turn to encryption to protect data at rest, according to a Bob Scheier at Computerworld. As long as companies stick to a single vendor for encryption technology, managing the keys is a relatively simple process, but as encryption devices proliferate (i.e. Seagate's native drive encryption, NetApp's use of Decru's encryption appliances, EMC's use of RSA's encryption software) managing multi-vendor and multi-generation keys used to decrypt data poses management nightmare."

Submission + - FCC Drops Vote to Expand Cable Oversight (techluver.com)

Tech.Luver writes: "_______________FCC Drops Vote to Expand Cable Oversight: Cable Industry 1, Consumers 0_______________ The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday backed away from a proposal by the agency's chairman that would open the door to broader regulation of cable TV operators._______________ FCC Chairman Kevin Martin announced last night he was tabling his drive to expand the agency's authority over cable companies after failing to win enough support from fellow panel members. The FCC will revisit the issue after obtaining more data from cable companies._______________ But Martin was forced to drop other new regulations he had proposed to impose on cable, including one sought by the NFL that would have given broadcasters more leverage in negotiations with cable operators._______________ lobbyists with the cable industry waged a fierce campaign against Martin's initiatives, including meetings with White House officials._______________ ( http://techluver.com/2007/11/28/fcc-drops-vote-to-expand-cable-oversight-cable-industry-1-consumers-0/ )"

Now the offer will be extended to December 31st"

Submission + - Linux Users Can't Sell On eBay (ubuntuforums.org) 2

bobintetley writes: Many Linux/Firefox users are reporting problems uploading images to eBay. Having tested this myself, it is indeed completely broken. Why eBay would break standard HTTP uploads by using IE specific javascript to "check the file exists" boggles the mind. This problem has been reported to eBay since late October, but so far with no resolution. eBay have since stated that only IE is supported. I guess when you have no real competition you can pull stunts like this.

Multics was one of the first operating systems to introduce concepts such as a hierarchical file system and dynamic linking. The final MULTICS release, MR 12.5 of November 1992, can be downloaded here."

Submission + - Gene Simmons: College Kids Killed Music Industry (reuters.com)

drcagn writes: "Gene Simmons has blasted 'college' kids and claims that they have destroyed the music industry, with the labels also to blame for not properly suing them out of existence when they had the chance. When asked about Radiohead and Trent Reznor's recent support of a different direction in music distribution, he says "that's not a business model that works. I open a store and say 'Come on in and pay whatever you want.' Are you on fucking crack?" When asked about music being free and making money off of merchandise, he says, "The most important part is the music. Without that, why would you care?" even though earlier in the interview he brags that he believes that KISS's merchandise is more profitable than Elvis's or the Beatles'."

Feed 8-core Mac Pro hands-on, Apple NAB booth tour (engadget.com)

Behold, Apple's mammoth, sprawling NAB booth. Ready to show off all the pro apps it announced yesterday, the Apple complex came complete with two demo theaters, dozens of demo kiosks, a few octo-core Mac Pros (which we finally got our hands on for a hands-on -- not that it looks any different), and a small army of black-clad employees ready to school you in the ways of pro media production. We asked for a Compressor 3 demo showing off the octo-Pro's multithreaded rendering, and while the demo didn't actually successfully wrap, we did get to see those eight cores burn through a bit of HD encoding right quick. Also, be sure to check out Apple's massive, 40 Xserve RAID equipped demo media SAN -- it's almost too much aluminum-clad enterprise gear.
