Comment Removing particle filter on diesel car is cheaper. (Score 4, Interesting) 114

In Portugal we still have a lot of diesel vehicles and many are old and owners opt to remove the particle filter instead of replacing it because it's cheaper and it's not tested in inspections, so they save money at the expense of everybody's else heath.. I'm happy electric cars have been booming in local market but something should be done a long time ago to completely remove the worse offenders.

I think EV should come with a basic battery that covers 90% of daily drive needs and then when additional range is needed you could rent, buy, borrow, swap additional battery modules. You should be able to mix match and combine your own battery modules with your neighbour batteries and a batteries from a highway station.

And why I kept recommending Telegram for some friends. It's a shame a company with the resources of Facebook - that bought WhatsApp for 16Billion took so long to implement something so simple that really makes a big diference in keeping conversations tidy and clean. It's a pitty the fragmentation that exists in instant messaging all around the world, so many good apps existed (like Google Allo, Google Wave) but big tech companies can't gather around and come to an agreement that's better for everybody with proper interoperability like we have in E-mail system, or WorldWideWeb for internet pages.. maybe one day EU will put order in all of them to allow true instant messaging interoperability with each other... or maybe Apple will pull another workaround and say you can send messages to other phones if you connect them over USB-C and initiate a message transmit sequence :P

I don't see a reason for this new software layer not to work with any bluetooth device... the problem with cheap bluetooth tags most of the time is the Chineese software app (isearching or something like that) that doesn't run all the time, or drains too much battery or can't be efficiently run alongside the Android as a service, but since this will be a new software layer made by Google it should be more acuraste and cause less troubles to the system when running in background (like the Covid proximity detection software that Google included in Android). Or am I missing something here?

I've seen them online but never tested one. I have doubts about 2 things: - Capacity will be reduced because they have to acomodate space for electronics and plug for each battery from pictures it seems to be taking 15 to 35% of space. So it would be much more efecient to have just one electronic circuit for all batteries on the device itself if needed. - that electronic voltage converter has to be always working, otherwise device will be powered off. So if device draws a very low current like TV remotes battery should last a long time without the need to be recharged but since that voltage conversion circuit is always working it will draw more power that what the actual device would need to draw ending up with dead batteries skin a shorter period of time.. So with correct lesligation we could see devices specifically made for the 3.7v li-ion batteries instead of the 1.5v regular batteries. (It should require a design for battery size that would only need one battery to reach same voltage as 2 regular batteries but it could still use 2 in parallel if additional capacity is needed).

Maybe we also need new standards for Smartphones like you said slim instead of cylindrical. Maybe 2 or 3 sizes for different smartphone sizes, but larger smartphones could also take 2 or 3 smaller batteries and could even be possible to replace 1 of them without powering down the device like your example Clockwork Pi. But that standardisation would need to be enforced, otherwise we end up on Apple way - that is most expensive as possible with less repair-ability possible and using proprietary connections that 3rd party accessories need to pay licenses to be able to connect and work as expected. We need more brands to follow the example of what fairphone is doing. https://www.fairphone.com/

Yes and no... I mean, what percentage of gadgets can you buy that use a 18650 vs those with non-rechargeable batteries? When shopping online for a new gadget I find myself looking for the type of batteries it needs and indeed if it has a 18650 slot I give it priority if all other specs are similar but there are way less choices when you really want that. That's where laws and rules would help. Other than 18650 there are also other smaller li-ion formats that could replace the AA and AA batteries (with the required electronics adjustments for voltage diference) but manufacturers won't change without being forced.

We need removable and standardised Li-Ion batteries on all gadgets, be it a TV remove or a smartphone. There is no sense in using NIMH rechargeable batteries on devices like TV remote because they have lower voltage and loose power overnight without being used. A pair of AAA batteries could easily be replaced with a rechargeable Li-Ion battery if there were rules and standards for this. If device has a USB-C port it could be charged, otherwise just replace battery with a charged one, that could be from phone or flashlight...

You are referring to studies in Canada and US where most cars are gasoline. In Europe most cars are diesel and in Portugal a big part of diesel cars had its particle filter removed. I can perfectly see old diesel cars constantly pumping dark smoke out of tailpipe, on a gasoline car that only happens if oil is being burned, on very old engines that pistons are leaking. Anyway every study I've seen showed that diesel engines emit way more NOX (that is highly toxic) and carcinogenic particles than gasoline engines that emit more CO2. CO2 is worse for global warming, but not nearly as bad for direct respiratory disease...

Carcinogenic particles are mainly from diesel cars, and in the last 20 years most people in Portugal have been buying diesel because diesel fuel is slightly cheaper, even though diesel cars are more complex and more expensive to buy and maintain. So there are a lot of diesel cars that just cruise around in city driving adding to the problem of breaking and replacing particle filter. If gasoline exhaust is worse for your health, that's new for me, and CO2 AFAIK should be lower on diesel but that's not what I worry. I know have experienced several times head aches caused by old diesel cars that can't avoid running behind and playing the game of opening and closing windows depending on wind direction...

Car manufacturing and pollution can be controlled at those specific places. Car driving will pollute wherever it goes unless it's an EV. So when you are on a queue in city driving and have 100 cars ahead of you for 2 hours every day in your life I'm sure everybody prefers to be behind 100 EV's than 1 ICE cars, let alone 100 ICE cars where 10 of them have cheating altered devices for extra pollution...
