Submission + - Google, Microsoft Escalate Data Center Battle

miller60 writes: "The race by Microsoft and Google to build next-generation data centers is intensifying. On Thursday Microsoft announced a $550 million San Antonio project, only to have Google confirm plans for a $600 million site in North Carolina. It appears Google may just be getting started, as it is apparently planning two more enormous data centers in South Carolina, which may cost another $950 million. These "Death Star" data centers are emerging as a key assets in the competitive struggle between Microsoft and Google, which have both scaled up their spending (as previously discussed on Slashdot). Some pundits, like PBS' Robert X. Cringley, say the scope and cost of these projects reflect the immense scale of Google's ambitions."

Submission + - "Why Software Sucks, And What You Can Do About

CPNABEND writes: Retired microbiologist Diana Westmoreland is no stranger to technology — except when it comes to computers. "The programs are intimidating. The language that's used is a foreign one to me," said Westmoreland, who lives near Cardiff, Wales. "I'm the sort of person who, when something crashes, apologizes to the screen." The problem, says consultant David Platt, lies not with the user but with the programmers, who just don't think like the people who use their products. Read The Article Here

Submission + - Alternatives to Applecare ripoff?

Anonymous Coward writes: "In the high tech world, vendors often charge 10-20% per year for maintenance, which usually includes software updates. More importantly, it usually includes some level of SLA for repairs, typically somewhere between 24x7 to 3 day turnaround.

"Applecare" costs around 10-20% (for two years). It does not include software upgrades, but that is minor compared to their service record. A 1.5 year old machine has already been in the shop over 3 weeks between two different services and is not expected to be fixed any time soon. For this second repair it has been sitting for eight days and they have not even looked at it yet — and do not expect to anytime soon — "there's about 10 machines ahead of you". The Mac will soon have spent 5% of the time since purchase at "Applecare".

I run Linux for most things, but the Mac is used for Photoshop and the print drivers. It is needed to produce work for shows. So... are there service warranties for the mac from 3rd party providers that are worth anything?

Or is there any way of having Apple behave responsibly?"

Near-Complete Cure For Diabetes In Two Years? 271

resistant writes "Researchers at a Toronto hospital have stumbled upon a dramatic treatment for mouse diabetes, with large implications for the treatment of diabetes in humans. From the article: 'The islet inflammation cleared up and the diabetes was gone. Some have remained in that state for as long as four months, with just one injection... They also discovered that their treatments curbed the insulin resistance that is the hallmark of Type 2 diabetes, and that insulin resistance is a major factor in Type 1 diabetes, suggesting the two illnesses are quite similar.'"
Update: 12/17 03:46 GMT by KD : resistant adds that the Cell Journal article is posted as a PDF as well as in plain text.

Submission + - Boston Globe: Stop using Opera

PetManimal writes: Mac Daniels of the Boston Globe weighed in on a prickly debate involving the updated local mass transit website. The Globe's advice to one complainer named "derspatchel": Stop using Opera. Derspatchel's response is to go Medieval on Daniels' ass, and ask the question: Why should Opera users give up the browser?
I don't give two whoops about the "percentage of the Internet population" or whatever. I don't care if a website works on someone else's choice of browser; I care if it works or not on my choice of browser. It's a modern browser, it's in active development, and it's free. Once dev stops on the Opera browser and the last version becomes outdated and unable to support newer Web innovations, then I'll "stop using it." How's that, Chuckles?
