Feed Fly Silent, Fly Cheap (wired.com)

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's an integrated wing-body concept aircraft that's quieter and more fuel efficient than anything aloft today. Here's why you won't be boarding it any time soon. By Dave Demerjian.

Submission + - which web statistics package would you use?

ken-doh writes: We host about 200 customers web sites on a windows platform, we want to provide them with a simple web statistics package via a logon to track hits visits etc etc. We have been using Deepmetrix LiveStats XSP which has been perfect for our customers, but since M$ purchased it, the product is no more, with support ending next year. So we need to buy a new stats package any ideas?

Submission + - Wireless power distribution.

thesp writes: "The BBC is reporting that wireless power, long considered a subject worthy of humour by those members of Slashdot discussing wireless networking, is under development at MIT.
Rather than employ radiative power transfer, which is lossy and inefficient, a non-dissipative approach is proposed. The system, currently only simulated at the physics level, could employ nanoscale electromagnetic resonators to transfer power directly without the need for trailing leads. The work is due to be presented at the AIP Industrial Physics Forum in San Francisco on 14 November. A preprint of the paper is available on the Arxiv."

Submission + - Zune incompatible with Windows Vista

justelite writes: "Apparently, Microsoft has been so focused on getting Zune out the door in time for the mad holiday rush that it hasn't gotten around to supporting the player under its next-generation operating system. Though seemingly implausible, the screenshot tells the story (while raising some questions at the same time). "This operating system is currently not supported by Zune," reads an error message when trying to install Zune software on the latest versions of Microsoft's own Windows Vista operating system. Some blogs tell that can be just joke from Apple fans but I think it is true,"

Submission + - HSBC results for IE7 and Firefox 2 anti-phishing

John Evelyn writes: "HSBC bank's technical investigations department evaluated Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 against its library of live phishing sites. Initially, IE7 is slightly ahead (94% detection) of Firefox (90%). Interestingly, on rechecking within two hours of notification, both achieve 98% detection. This shows how effective the browsers are at detecting NEWLY-REPORTED phishing sites and how rapidly they adapt to them. HSBC is a sponsor of the UK Government's Get Safe Online initiative and the report is available on their blog: www.getsafeonlineblog.org."

Submission + - Court Shuts Down Alleged Spyware Operation

Bron writes: PC World reports: "A U.S. district court has shut down a Web operation that is accused of secretly loading spyware and other malevolent software onto millions of computers after promising users free screen savers and video files, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said on Monday."

Submission + - Microsoft VS. Google: OneCare false positives

zeropointburn writes: Accidents happen. Microsoft makes plenty of mistakes, sure... but for OneCare to claim that Gmail is carrying a virus? Straight from the Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/14/onecare_gm ail_false_alert/
So, accident, or intentional? Note that this isn't the first questionable 'mistake'... Symantec has also been falsely flagged before...

Submission + - Wireless power

10thPlanet writes: Wireless power is a possibility according to this article from the BBC:

"The tangle of cables and plugs needed to recharge today's electronic gadgets could soon be a thing of the past. US researchers have outlined a relatively simple system that could deliver power to devices such as laptop computers or MP3 players wirelessly."

Submission + - Kroes sets EU deadline for Vista protocols

Pliep writes: The European Union puts extra pressure on Microsoft to deliver all the details — to allow its Vista systems to operate fully with rival networks, and fine them if they fail to do so.

From the article: "Neelie Kroes, the European Union's competition commissioner, gave the world's largest software group until next Thursday to hand over all relevant information about the secret protocols behind its Windows operating system. Ms Kroes fined Microsoft 280.5m (£190m) in July for failing to comply with commission rulings and could now fine it up to 3m a day."

Submission + - BMW to launch Hydrogen 7

jimmypw writes: "Hydrogen powered automobiles to the consumer market took one stop closer as BMW announce the Hydrogen Powered 7 series to be built in 2007. Drooling...?
From the article:"Next year it's [BMW] going to build 100 Hydrogen 7s, but its only going to lease them to 100 specially selected customers. So even if you had a hydrogen refuelling point in your garage, you're not going to be able to get your mitts on one unless BMW gives you a call.""

Transec, a Secure Authentication Tag Library 125

Lado Kumsiashvili writes, "Micromata has placed Transec, a secure authentication JSP tag library, under the GPL. While developing the Polyas (German) online voting system, Micromata invented a component for secure PIN/password input via untrusted, insecure browsers. Transec is freely embeddable and redistributable for non-commercial projects; a commercial license is also available. Spyware in the form of Browser Helper Objects and keyloggers can capture user keyboard input even if it is encrypted. Transec enables user authentication using a 100% server-side control — only images and coordinates are transferred to the untrusted browser. The browser sends coordinate information of each click on this imagemap directly back to the server, and the server responds with a new image. If the browser is infected by malware, it can't give up the PIN/password since the browser doesn't know this information. The Java code and a demo application are available at the Transec homepage." I have heard tales of malware that can grab a screen capture in the vicinity of the cursor at any mouse-click. Does anyone know if such a threat actually exists?

Official PlayStation Magazine Discontinued 51

Citing the advent of downloadable game demos and an inability for the magazine to 'fit into our integrated media network or afford us digital media opportunities', Ziff Davis' Official PlayStation Magazine will be closed out in January of next year. From the Gamasutra article: "According to the firm, Sony Computer Entertainment America will remain a key content and marketing partner for Ziff Davis Game Group, which will cover SCEA's PlayStation 3 and first-party games extensively across all of its media outlets, including EGM, 1UP.com, and GameVideos.com. The Game Group editorial team will also 'work closely with SCEA in the development of digital content for the PlayStation Network, accessible only through the PS3.' Due to the long-term decline in the magazine advertising market, Ziff Davis has been gradually transitioning away from print for some time, aggressively building up 1UP.com as its central website portal." 1up is carrying a story with the official announcement and some low-key commentary. If you're interested in how much this had to do with subscription numbers, GameSetWatch has a run-down on subscribers for many of the large gaming rags.

Submission + - Microsoft release MS Firefox 2007!

SouledOut writes: "MS release their top secret version of Mozilla's fantabulous browser. Maybe. I think the site speaks for itself:

"Microsoft's TakeOver Technology is a free, fully functional security feature within Microsoft Firefox"
"Tired of slow image rendering? Microsoft Firefox 2007 can deliver online pr0nography at blazing fiery speeds."
"LOL, Microsoft Firefox is the merging of unsurpassed technologies, and will effectively trash all its competitors, LMAO!""
