I don't feel that you made an accurate comparison. You car is made by $X manufacturer but in this case all the aftermarket addons which you have purchased at a myriad of other locations (i.e. window tint, car stereo, cup holders, car chargers) will also pop in and make their own changes.

So in this case the store that sold you your Clarion deck will stop by and fix your stereo but also leave a GPS tracker or mute your system to play their own wares.

Updating Chrome is one thing because Google doesn't want to mess with the PR nightmare when someone finds out their update streams popups like mad but some one off developer who makes a LOL Cat extension probably isn't making any money to begin with will have no problems bending one way or another for a couple of quick bucks. Both get equal say over the clock cycles on your system. Does that really make sense to you?

I don't think the result of your doctor finding out health concerns should result in a "gotchya" moment and why should it? Your doctor knows you very well in most circumstances in a medical and a social way, cornering his/her patient is always the least fruitful way of resolving an issue or helping someone.

In this world most pharmas would sell you each base pair at a time. If you would be able to quell the mechanism that mutates DNA then we could live in perpetuity at the point you stopped mutating DNA. Then we would have to buy time in units and have our remaining show up on a tattoo.... umm well never mind.

All of these companies make packaged solutions. It would be like taking a Ford motor, Toyota transmission and Honda body and hiring engineers to put it together. It doesn't make the job easier. When you bring in engineers they all have the same basic skills but have specialties due to their day to day workloads. They can tell you how their software works but it doesn't mean they can just 'fix' your software.

What this will do is encourage people to make their own HTPC. With Steam's new game pad and hopefully AAA game titles throwing something like XBMC along side it would make a pretty decent living room PC for a lot less than paying the Windows license. The drivers could be added to desktop distributions making those who already use Linux on the desktop happier and those sitting on the fence more likely to make the jump. Game developers already don't care about Windows but the PC game market is profitable and if Valve makes porting from console to SteamOS simple (which shouldn't be that bad since next gen consoles are x86 based) then more titles will show up on SteamOS before Windows. It's basically a role your own console. You can cheap out and put together an AMD APU setup with a couple GB RAM for a bit over $100 and play most games a mid to low res. When you consider that Xbox360 maxes out at 1080i/720p you could easily get that on AMDs next chips. Or you can just carry over all your Steam library and buy a card like the Radeon 7850 going for
TL;DR It will be better than you think.
